Training creative thinking by Gary A Davis( Book )

20 editions published between 1967 and 1978 in English and Undetermined and held by 479 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this book is to examine various strategies for increasing creative productivity, particularly in industry and in the schools. In addition to the emphasis on training imagination, the articles included in this book analyze such critical variables as the physical and psychological atmosphere which encourages or stifles imagination, intellectual and nonintellectual characteristics of creative individuals, testing for creativity, personal and social barriers to creative imagination, "selling" one's ideas, plus other important facets of creative behavior. Combined with the main strategies presented in this volume, these topics are intended to present a comprehensive picture of what to teach when teaching creativity, how to teach it, and why it should be taught. A total of 23 articles is included. A subject index is given. (Author/CK)

Laboratory studies of creative thinking techniques : the checklist and morphological synthesis methods by Wisconsin Research and Development Center for Cognitive Learning( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Six experiments were conducted to determine whether idea checklists increased idea quantity and quality. College students were allowed 10 or 20 minutes or unlimited time to find ideas for product improvement problems. Results indicated that the only checklist which significantly stimulated productivity was composed of just seven general categories of solutions (E.G., change shape, change material). Another creative thinking technique, the morphological synthesis procedure (Allen, 1962), also significantly stimulated idea production, but a direct comparison with the brief checklist condition was not meaningful. Subjects provided with longer checklists, including Osborn's (1963) 73 idea spurring questions, performed no better than controls. With additional problem solving time, rate of idea generation decreased but idea quality increased. Object complexity, manipulated in two timed studies, was not systematically related to product improvement scores, and instructional constraints to be original and be practical decreased idea frequency. It was thus concluded that creative output can be increased by teaching deliberate techniques for generating new combinations of ideas. (Author/JD)
Estimation theory approach to monitoring and updating average daily traffic by Gary A Davis( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes the application of Bayesian statistical methods to several related problems arising in the estimation of mean daily traffic for roadway locations lacking permanent automatic traffic recorders. A lognormal regression model is fit to daily count data obtained from automatic traffic recorders, and this model is then used to develop (1) a heuristic algorithm for developing traffic sampling plans which minimize the likelihood of assigning a site to an incorrect factor group, (2) an empirical Bayes method for assigning a short-count site to a factor group using the information in a sample of traffic counts, and (3) an empirical Bayes estimator of mean daily traffic which allows for uncertainty concerning the appropriate factors to be used in adjusting a sample count
Improving the estimation of travel demand for traffic simulation by Yao Wu( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report examined several methods for estimating Origin-Destination (OD) matrices for freeways using loop detector data. Least squares based methods were compared in terms of both off-line and on-line estimation. Simulated data and observed data were used for evaluating the static and recursive estimators. For off-line estimation, four fully constrained least squares methods were compared. The results showed that the variations of a constrained least squares approach produced more efficient estimates. For on-line estimation, two recursive least squares algorithms were examined. The first method extends Kalman Filtering to satisfy the natural constraints of the OD split parameters. The second was developed from sequential quadratic programming. These algorithms showed different capabilities to capture an abrupt change in the split parameters. Practical recommendations of the choice of different algorithms are given
