How people pay for college by John B Lansing( Book )

9 editions published between 1960 and 1982 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objectives were to determine what proportion of parents contribute to the college education expenses of their children, the amount they contribute, and how contributing parents budget and plan for the education of their children. Over 2,700 interviews were taken in 2 surveys in 1959-60. the interviews obtained information on the amount parents contributed to the expenses of their children while in college, funds accumulated prior to enrollment of the students, funds acquired during the period of enrollment, and other pertinent information. Parents of prospective college students were asked questions concerning plans for sending and financing their children through college. Medians, means, and frequency distribution on the financial variables and sample distributions on replies to other questions were presented. Multiple regression techniques were used to analyze expected and actual college attendance. Of the total annual expenses of college students in 1959, 60 percent were met from money contributed by their parents. Of the average total of $1,550, about $960 came from the parents, the remainder coming from money earned by the student, student scholarships, and other sources. Half of the families interviewed were able to draw upon money set aside in advance to help pay for the education of their children. In one family out of five, the mother took a job to help pay college bills. Forty-four percent of the families paid out of current income. (Gc)

Geographic Mobility of Labor, 1962-1963 by John B Lansing( )

4 editions published in 1984 in 3 languages and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study focused on labor force mobility in the United States. Wider in scope than previous studies of local labor markets and particular categories of workers, this investigation obtained information about attitudes, motives, and the economic circumstances of families, in addition to migration history and demographic characteristics. A broad range of data were collected on the causes of mobility and obstacles to mobility, the process of mobility, and its consequences. Three waves of interviews were conducted in August-September 1962, November-December 1962, and November 1963 with national cross-section samples of the adult population. From each household, either the head or the spouse was interviewed. Special samples of people living in redevelopment areas and having recently moved were also surveyed, and a panel of respondents selected from both a cross-national sample and residents of redevelopment areas was reinterviewed in August 1963. The data collection includes three files. Part 1 contains information for all respondents, including reinterviews, organized around the family as unit of analysis. Filter variables allow a separate analysis of cross-sectional data. In Part 2 the unit of analysis is the move, with variables documenting year, geographic region and state, and reasons for the move. Part 3 provides information about the relocation of adult offspring, other than the first, aged 18-29. Demographic data include age, sex, race, marital status, income, occupation, and level of education.... Cf.: http://webapp.icpsr.umich.edu/cocoon/ICPSR-STUDY/07434.xml
New Homes and Poor People, 1966-1967 by John B Lansing( )

4 editions published between 1969 and 1984 in 3 languages and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study focused on the indirect consequences of new housing construction by examining the sequences of moves triggered by first-time occupancies of new homes. In particular, the investigation attempted to ascertain whether the construction of new, relatively expensive housing might indirectly benefit low-income people or African Americans who could not afford to purchase these new houses but would be able to move into vacancies created farther along the chain. Interviews were first conducted with a representative sample of first-time inhabitants of newly-built homes, and then with the families that moved into the dwellings left vacant. Wherever possible, each chain of moves was followed to its logical conclusion. Demographic information includes age, sex, and education of family head, race of respondent, family life cycle, and family income
