Sex, career and family: including an international review of women's roles by
Michael Fogarty(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1071 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 912 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although concerned primarily with women in top jobs, the study also extends to women's opportunities in professional and managerial positions. It also focuses on the general pattern of relationships between men and women. Examining the special problem of women's promotion to top jobs, Part 1 studies the discrepancy between women's contribution to the lower and middle ranks of many highly qualified professions and the smaller number of women in higher posts. Part 2 reviews recent developments in Eastern Europe and in Western countries, studying the convergence of their different ideological points of view, attitudes, and policies. Based on national surveys, Part 3 considers the career and family patterns envisaged by young, highly qualified British women and the practicability of reconciling the two careers of husband and wife with successful family life. Part 4 examines the results of studies of women's experience in the following occupations: industrial and general business management, the broadcasting industry, Administrative Civil Service, architecture, medicine, teaching, and social service. Finally Part 5 considers possible long range implications of the enquiry, and of parallel work by Political and Economic Planning (pep) on the agencies promoting equal opportunities for women. Statistical data are appended. (Mw)

Economic control by
Michael Fogarty(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1955 and 2019 in English and Spanish and held by 267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"First published in 1955, this book offers a detailed history from the past to the mid-20th century on economic control. The book examines economic competition, particularly regarding the British economic system, and Fogarty looks at its scope, as well as its limits. This analysis considers working conditions in the mid-20th century, examining the impacts of industry on the life and work of the British agricultural population. The book first examines production decisions, arguing that a systematic and periodic overhaul of control mechanisms are required. Fogarty goes to give a detailed analysis on decisions about industry objectives. Ultimately, a broader look is given on the wider economic setting, and the definition of the economist is itself examined, taking into account the wider role that economics played in 20th century society. "This book, first published in 1948, examines four industries studied as part of the Nuffield College Reconstruction Survey, begun in 1941. These studies, despite their apparent diversity, have a number of features in common. One is geography, and another, more pressing, is the relation of industry to the Government and the public. The studies serve as part of the historical background of reconstruction, and they carry many lessons in economic organization."--Provided by publisher
