The revival of civic learning : a rationale for citizenship education in American schools by R. Freeman Butts( Book )

6 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The ideal of good citizenship is examined in light of current social and political unrest brought about, at least in part, by the agitation of special interest groups. Emphasis is placed on the role of citizenship education in the schools. The monograph is intended particularly for educators who want to improve citizenship education programs. The document is presented in five chapters. Chapter one identifies the major citizenship education challenge of the 1980s as the conflict between privatism in politics (due to a deterioration of national trust in the political system) and pluralism in education (resulting from attitudes that glorified doing one's own thing and from the belief that authority for education should rest primarily with the diverse pluralistic communities in American society). Chapter two contrasts ideas of citizenship in modern democratic societies and in Greco-Roman republics. Chapter three presents an historical perspective on citizenship education in the United States from the 1770s to the 1970s. Chapter four identifies major approaches to reform of civic education, including academic disciplines (particularly, history and sociology), law related education, social problems, critical thinking, values education, moral development, community involvement, and institutional school reform. The final chapter offers suggestions for improving citizenship education programs, including incorporating political values, political knowledge, and the skills of political participation into the curriculum; encouraging common understanding of and commitment to democratic values; and encouraging student understanding of citizenship concepts such as justice, freedom, equality, diversity, authority, privacy, due process, participation, and international human rights. This volume presents three previously unpublished papers, which constitute the personal statements of an emeritus professor, author, and scholar in the field of educational civics, philosophy and the history of education about his understanding of the meaning of that part of the professional preparation of teachers known as "educational foundations." The first paper, "Reflections on Forty Years in the Foundations Department at Teachers College," describes three periods in the scholar's career: first as the most junior member of the department at Teachers College, Columbia University (New York); the second consisting of 12 years of administrative responsibility; and the third being the period of the development of the department from 1960 to 1975. The second paper, "Teachers College and International Education," presents a summary of and reflections on international education efforts in the years 1955-1975. The third paper, "At Last--'A Civics Lesson for All of Us'", was issued in 1991 and focuses on the scholar's personal efforts after his 1975 retirement to make civic education a core element of the foundations of education courses at Teachers College. The Morality of Democratic Citizenship : Goals for Civic Education in the Republic's Third Century by R. Freeman Butts( Book )

4 editions published between 1988 and 2012 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In recent years a number of political and educational leaders and groups have urged the nation's public schools to place a greater emphasis on teaching civic values and on educating students to become citizens. This book puts forth the civic values and ideas that schools should be teaching. The volume is not a handbook or curriculum guide, but is designed to broaden the perspective of curriculum specialists, textbook authors, teachers, and educational policymakers. In the first three chapters of this four-chapter book, the study of and learning about history, the study and learning about constitutional principles, and the study and learning about conceptions of citizenship are examined. The final chapter offers a set of 12 ideas and civic values that should suffuse teaching and learning in the schools. These 12 values are justice, equality, authority, participation, truth, patriotism, freedom, diversity, privacy, due process, property, and human rights. (Db)
