Gun violence in America : the struggle for control by Alexander DeConde( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Few social issues have produced more exaggerated claims and contention among Americans than the struggle to control gun violence. Fueling the emotional fire in debates between firearms groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) and gun-control advocates is the dispute over the importance of guns in American culture. Is the fondness for firearms truly part of a venerable American tradition, one to be observed with very few limits? In this fascinating inquiry, Alexander DeConde delves into the myths and politics regarding gun-keeping, as well as the controversies over gun use, crime, and policing from the early days of the republic to the present."--Jacket

7 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 701 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reaching as far back as the Colonial era and examining events as recent as the 1991 war with Iraq, DeConde forcefully argues that, while ethnoracial considerations have always influenced American foreign affairs, ethnic groups have shaped policy only insofar as the Anglo-American elite has permitted them to do so. Less powerful groups, Americans of African, Asian, European, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern descent, have exerted considerable pressure on the government with only mixed results. DeConde assesses their perceived as well as their actual influence, and explores public reaction to their lobbying. He demonstrates how some ethnic groups, particularly the Irish and the Jews, have enjoyed comparative success in this arena, while others, such as African-American and Hispanic groups, have been unable to wield political power commensurate with their numbers
