Vasily Kandinsky by Thomas M Messer( Book )

10 editions published between 1997 and 2009 in English and held by 926 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the principal founders of abstract painting, perhaps the most revolutionary development in twentieth-century art. In this book, forty of his major works are reproduced as full-page colorplates. Each has been provided with an accompanying commentary by Thomas M. Messer, Director Emeritus of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, which possesses one of the most comprehensive collections of Kandinsky's art in existence
The emergent decade; Latin American painters and painting in the 1960's by Thomas M Messer( Book )

13 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 843 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This catalogue accompanied the first American museum retrospective of the English artist Francis Bacon. In his essay, Senior Curator Lawrence Alloway explores the essence of Bacon's painting beyond the usual associations with the grotesque. Instead, he offers a different argument: Bacon was a realist painter of his time, closely tied into the Grand Manner and painters such as Manet, Van Gogh, Velasquez, and Titian. Bacon continued and evolved the central tradition of European figure painting at a time when abstraction was dominating the art world. Also included are an exhibition checklist, 64 color and black-and-white reproductions, and a bibliography

Peggy Guggenheim : a celebration by Karole P. B Vail( Book )

10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born into a wealthy New York family, Peggy - whose Uncle Solomon would establish the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation - participated in the cultural ferment of life in London and Paris during the 192Os and 193Os. Her friends included many of the most significant avant-garde figures of the era, such as Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp. In London, she ran Guggenheim Jeune, her cutting-edge gallery devoted to contemporary art. During the months surrounding the outbreak of World War II, Peggy accelerated her purchases of abstract and Surrealist art until she was buying virtually one work every day, eventually amassing one of the most important collections of Modern art in private hands. After escaping to New York in the company of Max Ernst, she established the gallery Art of This Century, which from 1942 to 1947 featured her collection as well as the first or early solo exhibitions for such artists as Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko." "In 1948, Peggy settled permanently in Venice, where her home, the eighteenth-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, would become the Peggy Guggenheim Collection after her death in 1979. The collection is now one of the most celebrated for visitors to Venice. Vail's essay provides important new information on the Venice years, during which Peggy kept guest books that record the visits of an astonishing array of international personalities. Pages from these guest books - published here for the first time - include unique drawings by such artists as Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, and Saul Weinberg."--Jacket

Egon Schiele : the Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky collections by Egon Schiele( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele's death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements." "This publication accompanies the exhibition Egon Schiele: The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections, which presents paintings and drawings from the collections of the co-founders of Neue Galerie New York. Together, these collections comprise the finest gathering of works by Schiele in the United States." "Essays examine the artist's reception history in American and Austria, the censorship of his art during and after his lifetime, and the lost Schiele collections. This publication also traces, for the first time, Schiele's enormous influence on contemporary culture."--Jacket
