New directions in international education by Richard D Lambert( Book )

7 editions published in 1980 in English and Undetermined and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twelve articles offer a sampling of a wide variety of interrelated studies, reports, and recommendations on international education. They all relate to that aspect of the educational system in the United States devoted to studying, writing, and teaching about other parts of the world. A key article discusses the findings and recommendations of the Presidential Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies. The article discusses the efforts of the Commission to set new directions in international education that encompass every level of the education system from kindergarten to graduate studies and that comprise many functions, including research, training of specialists, and exchanges. Other articles deal with a specific level of the educational system and with specialized aspects. Specifically these articles discuss the following: (1) interest in international studies in the 1930s; (2) the need to promote foreign language and culture study; (3) possible new directions in foreign language study in the schools; (4) research and training in international studies in U.S. universities; (5) an analysis by the Rand Corporation of the need for language and international studies training; (6) international studies in elementary and secondary education; (7) a survey of the Council on Learning's Education and World View project; (8) the federal exchange program (of foreign visitors); (9) study abroad and international exchanges; and (10) the linking of business schools with foreign language and international studies. A summary article attempts to fit the pieces into a framework and suggests some items for an action agenda for the field. Book reviews conclude the publication. (Author/NE)

Language and area studies review by Richard D Lambert( Book )

9 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents results of a three-year review and evaluation of American college and university programs in Latin American, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, African, and Asian studies. Information was gathered through site visits; interviews of students, faculty, department chairmen, and administrators; and attendance at area association meetings. In addition, questionnaires were analyzed from program directors, individual specialists, and program graduates. Transcripts of degree recipients were also analyzed. The aim of the survey was to examine in detail the scale, composition, and direction of language and area studies, with particular emphasis on aggregate patterns. The sampling process for collecting information on individuals is described, followed by a study of the characteristics and types of individual specialists. A national cross-sectional analysis of area courses and a similar analysis of language instruction follow. Types of programs are explored, as well as their institutional setting, quality, productivity, and financing. Enrollment figures are analyzed and compared, and the motivation and characteristics of program students are discussed. The report concludes with recommendations and comments on the future development of language and area studies. Appendices contain sample questionnaires and an inventory of language and area study programs. (Author/AM)
