Attitudes and motivation in second-language learning by Robert C Gardner( Book )

20 editions published between 1969 and 1993 in English and Danish and held by 621 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book summarizes a 12-year research program concerning foreign-language-learning aptitude and factors which influence academic achievement. Attention is centered on the matter of individual differences in skill with foreign languages, concentrating primarily on adolescents attempting to learn French or English. The studies carried out by researchers from McGill University and the University of Western Ontario give rise to a sociopsychological theory of second- or foreign-language learning. In brief, the theory maintains that the successful learner of a second language must be prepared to adopt various aspects of another linguistic and cultural group. Research approaches are summarized and integrated while the separate research reports are appended with extensive supporting data. Students from Louisiana, Maine, Connecticut, and the Philippines were involved in the research. Subject and author indexes are provided. (Rl)

Tu, vous, usted : a social-psychological study of address patterns by Wallace E Lambert( Book )

10 editions published in 1976 in 3 languages and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reports on research in the area of address patterns, such as titles, last or first names, and the formal and informal pronouns used in many languages. The research was inspired by two distinct issues: (1) what is actually intended by a "sender" when he makes a particular choice of address form, and (2) what is actually interpreted by a "receiver" who has to process the address form he receives. Attention is given to cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons of address patterns and the structures of the social systems represented. Studies completed in Canada, France, Puerto Rico, and Colombia are reported on. A discussion of the social-psychological meaning of address forms concludes the volume. (Clk)

Issues in foreign language and second language education by Wallace E Lambert( Book )

1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Distinctions are made between foreign language (fl) and second language (sl) teaching and learning. It is suggested that several major issues emerging in fl and sl education in the United States must be considered before substantive improvements can be made in the fl or sl competence of both native English speakers and those whose native language is other than English. The issues to be resolved include the following: (1) fl and sl professionals have substantially different aims, orientations, and training and their offerings are directed to different populations of users; (2) there is a more serious demand by those being educated for higher levels of competence in foreign language and second languages than usually occurs in school-based education programs; and (3) there are time constraints, since no extra time can be directed to language education if it curtails the comprehensive education in math, sciences, humanities, and social sciences needed in today's technical and international world markets. The integration of the talents of both fl and sl professionals and educational approaches is advocated. It is suggested that two-way bilingual immersion education programs can simultaneously enhance the language competency of both native and non-native English students without shortchanging them on basic educational needs.
