This book is designed to aid teachers in sending students away from their instruction with a positive, rather than negative, attitude toward a subject or toward learning in general--an attitude which is essential if students are to use what they have learned and continue to learn more. The three-part book deals with the relationship between favorable attitudes, approach tendencies, and the inclination to use that which has been learned; the ways teachers can recognize behaviors which indicate favorable attitudes and can help students to develop and demonstrate them; and ways of measuring success in this area and of improving upon it. Special attention is given (1) to the role of three factors in determining the approach or avoidance responses of students to instructional activities (the conditions under which the activity takes place, the consequences of the activity, and the example provided by the teacher), and (2) to four factors which a teacher should analyze in determining how to improve his attitude-oriented instruction (instructor, instructional materials and devices, physical environment, and administrative rules or policies). Goal analysis is a procedure useful in helping to describe the meaning of the desired goals; whether these goals deal with attitudes, appreciations, or understandings. This book aids people in making better decisions toward their achievement and in recognizing progress and success. Four major parts describing important aspects of goal analysis are presented. Part 1 presents the purpose and function of goal analysis in relation to a larger scheme concerning performance and task analysis and target population description. Focus is placed on the idea that statements about attitudes and appreciations are statements about abstractions and are always inferred from circumstantial evidence. Part 2 indicates when there is a need for goal analysis. The methods of implementing goal analysis are explained in the third section. The fourth and final part suggests the possible variations in the analysis. When faced with a discrepancy between the actual and the desired performance of a student, employee, or acquaintance, the usual course of action is to "train, transfer, or terminate" the individual. The authors believe that while these may sometimes be appropriate solutions appropriately applied, more often they are not. They offer a procedure for dealing with such a performance discrepancy in a step-by-step manner. Their procedure, which follows the form of a flow chart, assists in analyzing the nature and cause of performance discrepancies. A performance discrepancy caused by a skill deficiency is differentiated from one caused by a lack of motivation or negative feedback. Once the cause of the problem is correctly identified, the procedure suggests appropriate remedies, including formal training, practice, positive reinforcement, or simply adequate feedback. The key ideas are illustrated by actual cases and anecdotes. A quick reference checklist summarizes the issues and questions to be raised when using this procedure. (Jy)
