Essays in ancient and modern historiography by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

35 editions published between 1975 and 2012 in English and held by 1,444 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arnaldo Momigliano was one of the foremost classical historiographers of the twentieth century. This collection of twenty-one carefully selected essays is remarkable both in the depth of its scholarship and the breadth of its subjects. Moving with ease across the centuries, Momigliano supplements powerful readings of writers in the Greek, Jewish, and Roman traditions, such as Tacitus and Polybius, with writings that focus on later historians, such as Vico and Croce. Charmingly written and concise, these pieces range from review essays reprinted from the New York Review of Books to treatises on the nature of historical scholarship. Essays in Ancient and Modern Historiography is a brilliant reminder of Momigliano's profound knowledge of classical civilization and his gift for deftly handling prose. With a new Foreword by Anthony Grafton, this volume is essential reading for any student of classics or historiography
Alien wisdom : the limits of Hellenization by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

45 editions published between 1971 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this classic study of cultural confrontation Professor Arnaldo Momigliano looks at the attitude of the Greeks to four different civilizations - the Roman, Celtic, Jewish and Persian - and analyses their cultural and intellectual interactions from the fourth to the first centuries BC. He argues that in the Hellenistic period the Greeks, Romans and Jews formed a special exclusive relationship and effectively established what until recent times was the normal horizon of Western civilization. --

On pagans, Jews, and Christians by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

17 editions published between 1987 and 1996 in English and Spanish and held by 687 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On Pagans, Jews, and Christians is an important addition to his masterly work, bringing together nineteen essays written in the past five years from sources such as The New York Review of Books, The American Scholar, and the Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. It is written with literate clarity and elegance, humane wisdom, and breadth of intellect. The focus of this book is the secular cultures of pagan Greece and imperial Rome, and the religious cultures of Judaism and Christianity which, in turn, grew from and influenced them and the modern world. For Momigliano, religion, secular ideology, and politics live in and illuminate the present. Chapters include “The Jews of Italy” (history viewed in the autobiographical perspective of the Momigliano family), “The Disadvantages of Monotheism for a Universal State,” “How to Reconcile Greeks and Trojans,” and “The Theological Efforts of the Roman Upper Classes in the First Century B.C.--

The development of Greek biography by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

36 editions published between 1971 and 1995 in 5 languages and held by 482 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Tracing the growth of ancient biography from the fifth century to the first century B.C., Arnaldo Momigliano asks fruitful questions about the origins and development of Greek biography. By clarifying the social and intellectual implications of the fact that the Greeks kept biography and autobiography distinct from historiography, he contributes to an understanding of a basic dichotomy in the Western tradition of historical writing. This classic study is now reissued with the addition of Momigliano's essay 'Second Thoughts on Greek Biography.'"--Publisher description
Essays on ancient and modern Judaism by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

7 editions published between 1987 and 1994 in English and held by 476 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Throughout his career, but especially in the final twenty years of his life, the great classicist and historian Arnaldo Momigliano (1908-87) wrote essays on a variety of Jewish themes and individuals. This volume collects twenty-six of these essays, most of which appear in English for the first time. Momigliano acknowledged that his Judaism was the most fundamental inspiration for his scholarship, and the writings in this collection demonstrate how the ethical experience of the Hebraic tradition informed his other works. Part 1 is devoted entirely to writings on ancient and medieval Judaism. In these essays, Momigliano ranges over such subjects as the stages of rapport between Hellenism and Judaism, the figure of Flavius Josephus, and the salient moments of Maccabean history. The overarching project unites pagan culture, Hebraic culture, and historiography
A.D. Momigliano : studies on modern scholarship by Arnaldo Momigliano( Book )

14 editions published in 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using pagan prose fiction produced in Greek and Latin during the early Christian era, Bowersock investigates the complex relationship among perceived and presented 'historical' and 'fictional' truths. Bowersock's superb lecturing style is successfully transferred into writing with force and eloquence, as he weaves accounts from a wide range of sources into his text, illuminating social attitudes of the period and persuasively arguing that fiction of the period was influenced by the emerging Christian Gospel narratives. In the second half of the first century emerges a new kind of fiction including outlandish tales of travel, romance and comic novels. Bowersock concentrates on secular literature, illuminating not only its literary motifs, but also reconstructing the societal context as one engrossed in fabrications and all kinds of revisions or rewriting. Using these less familiar materials as his points of reference, he reads into familiar Christian material, making linkages and casting new light on familiar subjects, as well as providing some provocative interpretations of familiar Christian texts. Bowersock uses close historical and literary analyses of specific passages of works, and pays attention to larger and more general issues and questions around the relationship between fiction and history and how we read them. This book will be of basic intellectual concern to all raised in the environment of Christian belief
