Moore in the Bagatelle gardens, Paris by David Cohen( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Henry Moore, who died in 1986, had a lifelong association with Paris that began with a visit in 1922 while he was still a student at the Royal College of Art in London, and culminated in the sculpture exhibit installed in the Bagatelle gardens in 1922, seventy years later. Over the years there have been many exhibitions of Moore's work in cities and museums around the world, attesting to the universal appeal of his sculpture. The installation in the Bagatelle gardens, though, was unique: a magical combination of the artist's monumental works set down in a park within one of the greatest cities of the arts. Moore like to see his work in nature, placing it in landscape around his home in the English countryside. This setting - with its changing natural light - emphasized for him the enduring and harmonious relationship between man and the natural world, one of the fundamentals of his sculpture. Moore in the Bagatelle Gardens, Paris presents fifty stunning photographs by Michael Muller. one of Moore's assistant, expertly capturing the enchanted atmosphere of this installation. David Cohen's introductory text discusses the particular works in the Paris show in relation to Moore's ideas about sculpture in the open air. This is a magnificent visual record of a unique exhibition, exploring an intriguing solution for the presentation of twentieth-century sculpture in natural settings." -- Publisher's description
Modern Life by Raymond Depardon( Visual )

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon is renowned for his documentation of the French countryside. In Modern Life he casts an affectionate and irreverent eye on a small community of farmers as they are confronted by the problems and challenges the contemporary world brings. Treated with equal suspicion, strangers and women are gradually accepted into the fabric of the farming life so as to sustain a way of life that celebrates the traditions and methods of old. The Cévennes region in southern France is a region of hilly passes, lonely farms and lonelier farmers. There we are introduced to aged bachelor brothers Marcel and Raymond Privat, whose old-fashioned shepherding methods and primitive farming techniques lead them into contention with their younger nephew and his 'outsider' wife from Calais. Then there's dairy farmers Germaine and Marcel Challaye, who struggle to maintain their diminishing flock with no help from their numerous children, and chain-smoking solitary farmer Paul Argaud, the very epitome of disillusion and governmental disinheritance. Finally the Jeanroy family offer a bleak picture of those that stay against the odds, with their son Daniel, who would much rather be doing anything else. Through portraits of these unforgettable people, Modern Life becomes a witness to farmers' lives, values, and stories: all that binds them to the land, and its legacy. "[4 stars] Poised and poignant...draws fascinating and subtle insight from individuals whose cherished way of life is slipping away." - Time Out New York. "Visually seductive, funny... A discovery well worth making." - Little White Lies. "Superb, affectionate and astute!" - The Evening Standard. "Rural France, like rural communities everywhere, are changing as new technologies and socio- political realities filter in from the outside. This colorful, poignant, and warmly funny doc watches as the close-knit land of small family farms senses that their hallowed way of life is slowly evaporating. Some stubbornly plan to die the way they have lived, others find ways to include the intrusions into their lives. And all do it for their families. Nice." - Video Tape Worm

My life in politics by Jacques Chirac( Book )

3 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Along with Mikhail Gorbachev, Helmut Kohl, and Francois Mitterand, Jacques Chirac is one of the most iconic statesmen of the twentieth century. Two-time president of France, mayor of Paris, and international politician, a recent poll voted him the most admired political figure in France, with current president Nicolas Sarkozy ranking in 32nd place. This memoir covers the full scope of Chirac's political career of more than 50 years and includes the last century's most significant events. A protEgE of General de Gaulle, Chirac started political life after France's defeat in Algeria in the early 1960s. He then became Prime Minister George de Pompidou's "bulldozer" and a personal negotiator with Saddam Hussein for France's oil interests in the Persian Gulf. He sold Iraq its first nuclear reactor and incurred the wrath of the United States and Israel, which he discusses in striking detail. As mayor of Paris, Chirac was famed for his success in beautifying the City of Lights and keeping it whole during the heady days of the 1968 riots. As president in the 1990s and early 2000s, Chirac took controversial steps to privatize the economy and plan the European Union. Chirac seldom pulls punches and in several dramatic chapters describes his opposition to the US invasion of Iraq in 2002 and his personal meetings with George W. Bush. These landmark events are brought into sharp focus in this memoir that the popular French magazine Paris Match said "steals the show" even after its author decamped the presidential palace
