Speech handicapped school children by Wendell Johnson( Book )

29 editions published between 1948 and 1967 in 3 languages and held by 1,138 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is designed primarily for students who are being trained to work with speech handicapped school children, either as speech correctionists or as classroom teachers. The book deals with four major questions--(1) what kinds of speech disorders are found among school children, (2) what are the physical, psychological and social conditions, hearing impairments, and other factors that are importantly related to these speech problems, (3) what can the classroom teacher do about them, on her own or in cooperation with a speech correctionist, (4) what are the basic examination methods and remedial approaches of the speech correctionist in dealing with the problems. Chapter one considers the area of speech disorders and speech correction, while chapter two is devoted to a discussion of the clinical point of view in education. The next six chapters treat particular disorders including those of articulation and voice, stuttering, retarded speech development, cleft palate, cerebral palsy, and impaired hearing. The final chapter deals with the public school remedial speech program. Seven appendixes contain projects for students, suggested topics for term papers, class demonstrations of problems, agencies and organizations, some basic features of speech sound articulation, estimating natural pitch level, and an open letter to the mother of a stuttering child. This document was published by harper and row, 49 east 33rd street, new york, N.Y. 10016, $7.50. (ab)

Stuttering in children and adults : thirty years of research at the University of Iowa by Wendell Johnson( Book )

23 editions published between 1955 and 1971 in English and Undetermined and held by 470 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stuttering in Children and Adults was first published in 1955. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. One of the largest groups of handicapped people in the world today is made up of the estimated fifteen million persons who stutter. Their predicament has been one of man's most baffling problems ever since it was first recorded by the ancients, but not until the present century has the mystery of stuttering showed any signs of lifting. The studies collected in this volume represent a substantial step toward the solving of the mystery. The University of Iowa, a pioneer in research on the causes and treatment of stuttering, has carried on its work for many years. This book presents all previously unpublished papers and dissertations (a total of forty-three) that have resulted from this research program. Much of the work centers on the onset of stuttering in children and underlies the theory that stuttering begins with the hearer rather than the speaker. Interrelationships between personality and stuttering have been investigated, a search has been made for a possible physical basis for stuttering, conditions affecting severity of stuttering have been studied, and research on therapy has been attempted. This is an important book for psychologists, educators, social workers, physicians, parents, and others concerned with speech disorders. For those who devote their full effort to the problems discussedthe specialists in speech pathology and therapythe book is essential
