The golden age of the quantity theory by David E. W Laidler( )

43 editions published between 1991 and 2016 in English and held by 1,361 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How did neoclassical monetary economics, as epitomized by the work of Fisher, Wicksell, and the Cambridge School, evolve from the classical orthodoxy that dominated economics in the 1870s? To answer this question, David Laidler considers the interaction of theoretical developments with contemporary policy debates about bimetallism and the evolution of the gold exchange standard. He argues that neoclassical monetary economics, in which the quantity theory of money played a central role, laid the intellectual groundwork for the replacement of the gold standard by various managed monetary systems in the years following World War I. Laidler is one of the world's foremost experts on monetary economics, and this book provides an illuminating account and analysis of one of the most important periods in the development of that field. Scholars of the history of economic thought and all monetary economists will find that The Golden Age of the Quantity Theory is the most systematic treatment of the development of monetary economics between 1870 and 1914 currently available. Hence the book questions the appropriateness of thinking of that development as the outcome of a "Keynesian revolution" in economic thought, partly because the most radical aspects of Keynes's own intended contribution were excluded from it, but mainly because IS-LM is better viewed as the end result of twenty years or more of intellectual development to which many others besides Keynes contributed

Two percent target : the context, theory, and practice of Canadian monetary policy since 1991 by David E. W Laidler( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores the transition from the decades of high & volatile inflation of the 1970s & 1980s to the stable monetary environment of the 1990s and documents the role of monetary policy in bringing about this transition. Part I reviews Canadian monetary policy and its background since the early 1990s, and ends with an overview of the evolution of the debates surrounding monetary policy and inflation. Part II begins with discussion of central banking in general and its development in Canada in particular. It then looks at the economics of monetary policy: what it can & cannot do and how changes in the stance of the central bank work their way through the economy. It ends by discussing how monetary & fiscal policy interact and the nature of democratic control over the central bank. Part III examines the experience of the past decade related to the conduct of monetary policy in the context of international & domestic economic developments. It also details the framework for monetary policy in Canada as well as the major changes in the Bank of Canada's operating procedures since the early 1990s. The final part draws some conclusions from recent Canadian experience with low inflation, assesses alternatives to current monetary policy arrangements, and speculates about directions for such arrangements in the years ahead
Prospects for Canada : progress and challenges twenty years after the Macdonald Commission by David E. W Laidler( Book )

9 editions published between 2000 and 2005 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1985, the report of the Royal Commission on the Economic Union & Development Prospects for Canada (commission chair Donald Macdonald) set out recommendations that became a focus for the development of economic & social policy in Canada. This volume of papers reviews the contribution that the Macdonald Commission report made to Canadian public policy, examines the changes since then, and looks at the enduring lessons that policymakers can draw from its conclusions. The volume begins with a personal perspective on the Commission's work & report by Donald Macdonald, then presents papers on macro stability & economic growth (the economic & political climate, inflation, income policy, the deficit, unemployment, living standards), labour markets & social policy (including immigration, labour-management relations, education & training, income security), international trade (notably the recommendation for a Canada-United States free trade agreement), and federalism & Canada's economic union (executive federalism & regionalism, proportional representation, Senate reform, trade & capital markets, securities regulation, fiscal agreements, intergovernmental transfers)
