This book examines the art of Japan and Korea. Relations between the two are highlighted. Likewise, the text points out the influence of China, whose artists of the Shan, Han and T'ang dynasties inspired splendid Korean painting and pottery. It was then Chinese and Korean craftsmen and painters migrating to Japan in the sixth century who paved the way for the fine early temple architecture, sculpture, painting, lacquer- and metal-work. Art from Korea is presented from the Koguryō, Paekche, Silla, Koryo, and Yi periods. Japanese art is presented from the Jōmon, Yayoi, Kofun, Asuka, Nara, Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, Momoyama, Edo and Modern periods

"The Age of Impressionism describes not so much a style as a dazzling assembly of individuals who shared a common urge to create something new--something unacademic, realist rather than romantic, recording immediate visual impressions. Some artists were devoted to outdoor painting: Monet, Pissarro, Sisley--whereas Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec preferred to stay indoors with their dancers and laundresses; and Renoir's taste was for pretty women in either setting...This lucid guide containing 83 full-color illustrations embraces every significant direction in the age we now chiefly associate in art with Impressionism."--inside flap
