New media in public libraries : a survey of current practices by James W Brown( Book )

10 editions published between 1976 and 1978 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over 200 brief reports and some 85 case studies, developed from responses to a national questionnaire, report the state of the art for new media activities in public libraries. Through these case studies of large and small libraries throughout the United States, a picture of public library use of television, audio programs, mediamobiles, plus all types of film is presented. Some of the library activity descriptions are rather general; others are quite specific. All reveal an interest in expanding media use; many indicate the clientele toward which the new media service has been directed; some also present cost and evaluation efforts. Survey responses are organized by state. The case study material is organized in media-specific groupings. A list of 25 sources of additional information is appended. (Kb)

Nonprint media information networking : status and potentials by James W., Ed Brown( Book )

7 editions published between 1976 and 1977 in English and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A seminar was held in March, 1976, at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (aect) Annual Convention to discuss the problems of nonprint media selection. The major question raised in the seminar was the extent to which an economical information system to provide qualitative as well as purely technical descriptions of educational media to users was possible. The concerns of users of such a system were addressed by a panel of participants from (1) an education/library group; (2) a United States Government group; (3) an entrepreneurial information group; and (4) a commercial publisher and data system entrepreneur group. The short papers that contain the viewpoints of the 16 panel members are collected for this report, along with an introduction, a summary of findings, a bibliography, and a directory of related organizations. Gerlach, who questions the validity of research focusing on the superiority of individual nonprint media over books and other types of media, as well as the utility of computers for instruction. He calls for disciplined research and increased attention to the behavior of instructional developers. Robert K. Branson cites and reviews the significance of several cases involving applications of instructional systems technology to training problems associated with business/industry and government/military institutions. Barry Bratton and Kenneth H. Silber note some recent changes in the field and efforts to discipline and upgrade it professionals through certification and accreditation.
