Studying individual development in an interindividual context : a person-oriented approach by
Lars R Bergman(
)
21 editions published between 2002 and 2009 in English and held by 1,710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
During the last decade there has been increased awareness of the limitations of standard approaches to the study of development. When the focus is on variables and relationships, the individual is easily lost. This book describes an alternative, person-oriented approach in which the focus is on the individual as a functioning whole. The authors take as their theoretical starting points the holistic-interactionistic research paradigm expounded by David Magnusson and others, and the new developmental science in which connections and interactions between different systems (biological, psychological, social, etc.) are stressed. They present a quantitative methodology for preserving--to the maximum extent possible--the individual as a functioning whole that is largely based on work carried out in the Stockholm Laboratory for Developmental Science over the past 20 years. The book constitutes a complete introductory guide to the person-oriented approach. The authors lay out the underlying theory, a number of basic methods, the necessary computer programs, and an extensive empirical example. (The computer programs have been collected into a statistical package, SLEIPNER, that is freely accessible on the Internet. The empirical example deals with boys' school adjustment from a pattern perspective and covers both positive and negative adaptation.) Studying Individual Development in an Interindividual Context: A Person-Oriented Approach will be crucial reading for all researchers who seek to understand the complexities of human development and for their advanced students

"A full understanding of the developmental process in individuals requires contributions from disciplines including developmental biology and psychology, physiology, neuropsychology, social psychology, sociology and anthropology. This ambitious and wide-ranging book is an attempt to present the findings from these and related areas to motivate a holistic view of human development from conception to death." "Based on a Nobel symposium, the topics discussed range from the function and development of single cells to the whole organism interacting with its environment. Chapters fall into six parts, dealing with early development, the changing brain, cognition and behavior, biology and socialization, social competence and aging." "Drawing upon new theories and models, including the study of nonlinear dynamic systems and chaos theory, this book represents a major step in the move towards an integrated science of human development."--Jacket

Problems and methods in longitudinal research : stability and change(
Book
)
30 editions published between 1989 and 1994 in English and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Longitudinal research in human development requires more careful planning than do cross-sectional studies, and is demanding theoretically and organizationally. This volume focuses on methods of data treatment, emphasizing the importance of careful matching of methodology to the substantive problem under consideration. It deals particularly with concepts of stability and change which are central to personality and developmental research. The ultimate goal for developmental research is to understand and explain the developmental process underlying an individual's way of thinking, feeling, acting and reacting at any stage of the life process. Contributors to this volume explore the methodology and scope of life-span longitudinal studies in a variety of contexts, including intellectual and cognitive development, transitions such as that from childhood to early adult life, social mobility, behavioural genetics, and psychological disorder, particularly depression. Stressing the advantages of the prospective approach, and providing detailed analysis of the methodologies available, this volume is based on a workshop sponsored by the European Science Foundation. It will be of particular interest to social and behavioural scientists, and to research workers in such disciplines as psychology, psychiatry and epidemiology where longitudinal studies have an important place in the study of human development

Longitudinal research on individual development : present status and future perspectives(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1993 and 2006 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Longitudinal research is an essential element in the investigation of human development over time, with considerable advantages over more widely used cross-sectional research designs. This book examines the scope for longitudinal studies in a range of developmental fields, emphasizing the advantages of this approach for the investigation of causal mechanisms and processes and the dynamics of development over the life-span. It also discusses methodological issues and some of the practical and ethical problems that longitudinal research may present." "Drawing on the final conference in the European Science Foundation's network dealing with longitudinal research on individual development, this is a valuable reference work for behavioural and developmental scientists. The distinguished contributors review normal and disordered development in the emotional, cognitive and social domains, including valuable discussions of gene-environment interactions, the maturation of the human brain, and issues relating to aging." "As a source of information and ideas this volume, the concluding work in this series, will be of interest to practitioners and research workers in developmental disciplines at any stage of the life-cycle."--Jacket
