Costume in Greek classic drama by Iris Brooke( Book )

45 editions published between 1900 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,081 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book aims to give all available detail that might be of use to anyone interested in drama and in search of information, and also that might help him to obtain an impression of the vivid aspect of classical drama. Such details cover the period from the fifth century B.C., when the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were new, and compare them with the second century A.D., when Julius Pollux was writing of Hellenistic times and Imperial Rome, when costume had become a sort of formalized version of what the Romans imagined had been the Greek classic style. There is a difference which is obvious in contemporary works, and Pollux's insistence that Roman theatre costumes were in the Greek tradition is as inaccurate as the various classic revivals have been at different periods in our history. - p. 2

English children's costume since 1775 by Iris Brooke( Book )

35 editions published between 1930 and 2011 in English and held by 906 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Late in the eighteenth century, the apparel worn by English children began to look different from that worn by their elders. The reason, says writer James Laver in his introduction to this book, is that someone finally realized children were different! (A child of that period could hardly play comfortably dressed like his father in periwig, long coat, and sword.) This engaging book traces those changes, with illustrations depicting styles at five-or ten-year intervals, from 1775-when distinctive costume for children first made its appearance-to 1920. Each attractive and interesting drawing is accompanied by a concise description. With text and illustrations by an international authority on the history of costume, this delightful and instructive little book will be valued by students and historians of fashions as well as designers of period costume
