American greats by Robert Wilson( Book )

5 editions published between 1999 and 2001 in English and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

American Greats offers compelling evidence of the courage and character, invention and resilience, that helps define this nation. It's about action and, therefore, character. It celebrates what the late Commissioner of Baseball, Bart Giamatti described as "that compound whose mix forms the American character-of moral energy and pragmatic efficiency, optimism and guile, respect for law, admiration for the maverick, and love of the underdog." This book, finally, is about the never-ending American story: possibility

Effect of different routes of challenge of coxsackie B virus on cold-stressed mice by Stanley Marcus( Book )

4 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Adult albino mice were given Coxsackie B virus via intrathoracic, intraperitoneal, intranasal and aerosol routes. The mice were either acclimatized or unacclimatized to 2C ambient temperature, and in one challenged group normal mice were compared to specifically immunized animals. No deaths occurred in the control animals (21C) challenged intranasally or by aerosol; however, 5/10 mice were killed by the intrathoracic challenge and 1/10 died from the intraperitoneal challenge. In general the mice unacclimatized to 2C had higher mortality ratios than acclimatized animals in all challenged groups regardless of the route of challenge. Intranasally and intraperitoneally challenged mice had similar mortality ratios in all groups tested. Many of the deaths of the intrathoracically challenged mice are attributed to the procedure of challenge. The few deaths in the aerosol challenged groups are thought to be a dose-related factor. Effect of acute and chronic low temperature stress on survival of mice challenged with staphylococcus aureus( Book )

3 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Normal and immunized mice were subjected to acute and chronic stress of 2 C ambient temperature. The mice were challenged with varying doses of Staphylococcus aureus, strain Fritchie. Immunization offered significant protection to mice kept at 21 C and to mice that were immunized, challenged and acutely exposed to 2 C in groups. No protection was observed in mice that were immunized, challenged and exposed as individuals to 2 C. Also, immunized mice that were chronically cold exposed at 2 C were not protected against subsequent challenge and showed equivocal mortality ratios compared to the normal controls challenged under the same conditions. Effect of acclimatization to 2 c on host susceptibility to klebsiella pneumoniae challenge by Stanley Marcus( Book )

4 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Adult albino mice were exposed to 2 C in groups for varying time periods prior to challenge intraperitoneally with l LD50 of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Animals exposed to the low temperature for up to five days prior to challenge showed no significant differences in mortality from the controls. Statistically significant survival ratios were obtained if the mice were exposed to cold for more than five days prior to challenge. No deaths were observed in comparable specifically immunized groups of animals
