Two worlds of childhood: U.S. and U.S.S.R by Urie Bronfenbrenner( Book )

133 editions published between 1970 and 1993 in 14 languages and held by 2,312 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on cross-cultural research data and related findings, this book presents a comparative examination of the socialization process in the Soviet Union and the United States, and relates the findings to the present and future societies at large. It begins with descriptive facts, examines their implications in light of data and theory from the social sciences, and ends with a blueprint for change within our own society. The socialization process is analyzed as it occurs in a series of social contexts beginning with the family, then proceeding to other settings such as preschool centers, children's groups, classrooms, neighborhoods, communities, and the nation as a whole. In terms of socialization, the major difference between the two cultures lies in the contrast between a collective centered and family-centered system of child rearing. The first chapters consider the role of family and collective settings in the Soviet Union and their psychological implications. The remainder of the book considers American approaches to socialization, identifying and describing the major environmental influences on the behavior and development of children, and their increasing importance. The author concludes that the rather different Soviet approach to socialization has significance for our own problems. (Author/JLB)

Politicians, pundits, and media "experts" are constantly barraging us with facts and figures to bolster their arguments about America's social and economic ills. Most of the time their information is partial, misleading, or just plain wrong. Now, some of America's foremost social science researchers collaborate to provide citizens and voters with an accessible, jargon-free guide to the key issues that will be debated in the coming campaigns. After culling through thousands of surveys, data banks, and research documents they have put together in an easy-to-read guide the most reliable facts and statistics on crime, the economy, changing family structure, poverty, education, changing attitudes and values, and the shift in age structure in the United States
Examining lives in context : perspectives on the ecology of human development by Phyllis Moen( Book )

17 editions published between 1995 and 2001 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This groundbreaking book extends the work of Urie Bronfenbrenner whom Melvin Kohn described as "the quintessential person for spurring psychologists to ... realize that interpersonal relationships are embedded in the larger social structures of community, society, economics, and politics." In Examining Lives in Context, over two dozen distinguished scholars show how Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory and research led them to focus their own work on problems crucial to "real life"--The complex, rapidly changing world that challenges researchers to design inquiries in often dramatic new ways. By taking into account the importance of time, place, process, and life course, the interdisciplinary contributors to this volume forge a new path in previously uncharted territory in human development
