The Gospel of Luke : a commentary on the Greek text by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

41 editions published between 1978 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 946 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Gospel of Luke was written as an historical account of the ministry of Jesus. Not only would it serve as the basis for a sound faith on the part of professing Christians, but it would also claim a place for Christianity in history. Christ's ministry, as Luke shows, is realized prophecy; it is that time during which God's promise of salvation was fulfilled. His teachings, healings and acts of compassion are all part of the good news. In Luke's Gospel, Christ's message of salvation is directed to the weak, poor and needy, with an emphasis on the importance of self-denial and of whole-hearted discipleship. Thus, while Luke is the most conscious historian of the Gospel writers, his history is a vehicle of theological interpretation in which the significance of Jesus is expressed. This commentator calls attention to the theological message of Luke the Evangelist. His primary purpose is to exegete the text as it was written by Luke, so that the distinctiveness of Luke's Gospel may be seen
Luke : historian and theologian by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

41 editions published between 1970 and 2006 in English and held by 903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The writings of Luke (Luke-Acts) comprise over 28% of the whole New Testament -- even more than the extensive writings of his friend and companion, Paul, whose letters account for almost exactly a further 25%. This fact alone emphasizes the vital importance of the Lucan corpus to a true understanding of the doctrine as well as the history of apostolic times. There has been a growing awareness of the qualities of Luke as a historian, and in this book Dr. Marshall demonstrates that Luke's theology, which he summarizes as "the theology of salvation," is at least of equal stature and importance with his carefully compiled history. - Back cover
The Epistles of John by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

35 editions published between 1978 and 2009 in English and Spanish and held by 794 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The three Epistles of John, according to the author, are concerned with the fundamentals of Christian belief and life -- faith and love. The reader who grasps the message of these short but essential letters will have a sound basis in Christian doctrine. This group of Epistles is also a good starting point for the study of the Gospel of John. This important commentary was written not only so that students of the Bible might master the content of John's Epistles, but that they might come to a proper understanding of Johannine theology as a whole
Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels by Joel B Green( Book )

10 editions published between 1992 and 2003 in English and Korean and held by 793 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Regrettably, while the general populace on both sides of the Atlantic have been exposed to the sensationalism of such projects as the Jesus Seminar and Jesus: The Evidence, no major undertaking has made available to the larger church the representative scholarship of students of Jesus and the Gospels which is both critically responsible and theologically evangelical. The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels has been prepared to meet such needs as these. For students it provides introductory discussions and comprehensive surveys. For pastors and teachers it provides reliable and readable information. For theologians and biblical scholars it provides up-to-date reviews. - Preface

The theology of the shorter Pauline letters by Karl P Donfried( Book )

15 editions published between 1993 and 1999 in English and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book breaks new ground in offering an exposition of the theological message of the Shorter Pauline Letters. Karl P. Donfried puts 1 and 2 Thessalonians in their cultural context, and identifies a number of key themes in these letters, such as the notion of election. I. Howard Marshall's study of Philippians brings out especially the understanding of the theological basis of the Christian life that underlies the letter, while his discussion of Philemon emphasizes how the main theme of the letter is the relation between the gospel and Christian ethics

A critical and exegetical commentary on the Pastoral Epistles by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

20 editions published between 1999 and 2007 in English and held by 437 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This addition to the ICC series is an introduction to the Epistles to Timothy and Titus, treating their structure, origin and character, followed by a detailed investigation of the texts. Professor Marshall concludes that the composition is not as unstructured as some commentators have suggested, but rather is carefully conceived. Each section of the Epistles is discussed on the basis of the Greek text. Scholars and students will find the commentary particularly helpful with its lexical information on the Greek words and its careful discussion of the syntactical problems. This is a fresh and comprehensive commentary on the Pastoral Epistles from a scholar of international renown."--Bloomsbury Publishing

New Testament theology : many witnesses, one Gospel by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

9 editions published between 2004 and 2014 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"New Testament theology is essentially missionary theology," writes I. Howard Marshall. Founded on a sure-footed mastery of the data and constructed with clear thinking lucidly expressed, this long-anticipated New Testament theology offers the insights born of a distinguished career of study, reflection, teaching and writing on the New Testament. Here is a New Testament theology that does not succumb to the fashion of settling for an irreconcilable diversity of New Testament voices but argues that "a synthetic New Testament theology is a real possibility. Beginning with the Gospels and Acts, proceeding to each of Paul's letters, focusing then on the Johannine literature and finally looking at Hebrews and the remaining general epistles, Marshall repeatedly stops to assess the view. And gradually he builds up a composite synthesis of the unified theological voice of the New Testament
Witness to the Gospel : the theology of Acts( Book )

7 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A distinguished group of scholars here provides a comprehensive survey of the theology of the early church as it is presented by the author of Acts. These twenty-five essays, designed to show the current state of scholarship in ways accessible to students of the New Testament, discuss the main themes in the theology of Acts: God's plan of salvation, the call of God and the spreading of the Word, the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, the relationship of Jews and Gentiles in the church, and more."--Jacket
Kept by the power of God : a study of perseverance and falling away by I. Howard Marshall( Book )

13 editions published between 1969 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a very controversial subject which disturbs many people. It is the contention of the author that there is biblical truth in both the Calvinistic and the Arminian position concerning this volatile subject, and that each camp should candidly recognize the value of the other's positions. John Wesley once wrote, "The truth of the gospel is within a hairsbreadth of Calvinism." Quite a concession for the chief spokesman of Arminianism! Dr. Howard I. Marshall echoes the contention of Wesley, and then goes even beyond it. "The full Arminian position is as much open to error as is extreme Calvinism. My aim is to reach beyond the Calvinist-Arminian controversy to a position which is biblical."--Back cover
