"Fortune smiles on Mark Robarts, a young man of charm and principle. Not only has Lady Lufton appointed him Vicar of Framley, but he has also been blessed with a happy marriage. Yet, his naivety and social ambition draw him toward a sophisticated, worldly set who question his moral values and sense of honour. Falling under the spell of the roguish Nathaniel Sowerby, Robarts is brought to the edge of ruin. Only his friends can save him but will they discover his predicament in time? For Lady Lufton there are further trials and tribulations when she suspects her son of forming an unsuitable attachment. Anthony Trollope brings all his accustomed wit, perceptive eye and lively comic touches to this matchless portrayal of nineteenth century life. Published to great acclaim in 1860, Framley Parsonage is one of his most popular novels and the fourth in the Barsetshire Chronicles."--Publisher's description

"John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was the most talented, prolific and successful painter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Following the break-up of this short-lived avant garde movement, he went on to become the most famous and successful, as well as one of the most creative, of all Victorian painters. He was unique in pioneering a new land of psychological realism in art, presenting human beings in complex situations from the past and present that engage the viewer's empathy." "Through the authors' engaging essays as well as the extensive colour illustrations, Millais emerges as an artist of extraordinary diversity and vitality whose art embraced a wide variety of subjects from inventive historical anecdotes to enigmatic character studies and brilliant society portraits. His magnificent late Scottish landscapes, shown here as a group for the first time for over a century, are unique in terms of their scale and expressive energy. Millais is revealed to be one of the most challenging and innovative artists of the nineteenth century."--Jacket

Time present and time past : the art of John Everett Millais by Paul Barlow( Book )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

John Everett Millais (1829-1896) is undoubtedly among the most important of Victorian artists. In his day, and our own, he remains also the most controversial. While, during his lifetime, controversy centred around his early Pre-Raphaelite paintings, in particular Christ in the house of his Parents (1850), during the twentieth century the most intense criticism has been directed towards Millais's later works, such as Bubbles (1886), which has been widely condemned as sentimental 'kitsch'. These later paintings have been held up as the epitome of the degradation of art, against which avant-garde and Modernist pioneers struggled. None of the existing literature on Millais addresses the fundamental problem that this double-identity reveals. While there is extensive material on the Pre-Raphaelite movement in general, Millais's own work after the 1850s is rarely discussed in detail, despite the fact that he lived and worked for another 30 years after his abandonment of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Time Present and Time Past: The Art of John Everett Millais presents the first comprehensive account of Millais's artistic career from beginning to end. The book considers the question of 'high' and 'low' cultural status in debates during Millais's own day, and in subsequent critical thinking, situating Millais's art as a whole within this cultural framework
Beyond decoration : the illustrations of John Everett Millais by Paul Goldman( Book )

6 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"John Exerett Millais (1829-1896) is probably best known today as a leading English painter of the nineteenth century and a founder member in 1848 of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In the sphere of black-and-white book and periodical illustration he was an outstanding master. His range was enormous and he could illustrate in a number of different styles to suit the texts he was given. He was equally at home with poetry by Tennyson, novels by Anthony Trollope and Harriet Maritineau, and delightful books for children. Because so many of his designs are scattered through various publications, some of which are rare and obscure, this significant area of his oeuvre has remained under-appreciated." "This book is the first to present faithful reproductions of all of Millais's published illustrations. An important feature is the discussion of every image together with its literary context, to ensure a full understanding of the meaning Millais wished to convey and illuminate. The original designs are chiefly wood-engravings, through some were engraved on steel; the small number of etchings that he undertook are also included."--BOOK JACKET
