Shapes, space, and symmetry by Alan Holden( Book )

31 editions published between 1971 and 1992 in English and French and held by 1,160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explains the structure of the 9 regular solids, including the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron, plus many semiregular solids. It demonstrates how they can be used to explain mathematics visually rather than by symbol systems, and includes instructions for constructing cardboard models. Over 300 illustrations
Bonds between atoms by Alan Holden( Book )

16 editions published between 1966 and 1971 in English and held by 466 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The field of inquiry into how atoms are bonded together to form molecules and solids crosses the borderlines between physics and chemistry encompassing methods characteristic of both sciences. At one extreme, the inquiry is pursued with care and rigor into the simplest cases; at the other extreme, suggestions derived from the more careful inquiry are pushed to provide qualitative insights into the complexities of chemical behavior. This monograph provides an introduction to both points of view and to the relationship between them. Primary emphasis is on the physical nature of the simplest chemical bonds, though it examines a few molecules that are more complicated to point out the wide qualitative relevance of the more rigorous approach. Extensive use of simplified models is made. (Author/RH)
The nature of atoms by Alan Holden( Book )

15 editions published between 1968 and 1971 in English and held by 455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph was written for the purpose of presenting physics to college students who are not preparing for careers in physics. It deals with the nature of atoms, and treats the following topics: (1) the atomic hypothesis, (2) the chemical elements, (3) models of an atom, (4) a particle in a one-dimensional well, (5) a particle in a central field, (6) angular momentum of a particle in a central field, (7) hydrogen-like atomic states, (8) the building-up principle, (9) the two-electron delta-well atom, and (10) many-electron atoms. All but the first three chapters presuppose an acquaintance with wave mechanics. The monograph is one of a series resulting from the Conference of the Commission on College Physics on the New Instructional Materials in Physics. (Dh)

Wave-mechanical properties of stationary states by Alan Holden( Book )

5 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph is a review of the quantum mechanical concepts presented in two other monographs, "The Nature of Atoms" and "Bonds Between Atoms," by the same author. It is assumed the reader is familiar with these ideas. The monograph sketches only those aspects of quantum mechanics that are of most direct use in picturing and calculating the behavior of atoms when they are stably bonded together in molecules and solids. Its emphasis is on stationary states; it does not deal with processes. The chapters are as follows: Wave-Like and Particle-Like Behavior; Probability and Stationary States; Uncertainty and the Particle in a Box; Schroedinger's Equation; Wave Functions, Operators, and The Harmonic Oscillator; Orthogonality and Kinetic Energy; The Variational Method of Approximation; The Spinning Electron; Symmetry and the Exclusion Principle. Problems are included at the end of each chapter. (Pr)
