Education of a princess : a memoir by Marie( Book )

26 editions published between 1930 and 1937 in English and held by 1,451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marie was the granddaughter of Czar Alexander II, the daughter of Grand Duke Paul, and the cousin of Tsar Nicholas. Her brother, Prince Dmitri, was one of the plotters against Rasputin. He was exiled for that, to the Persian frontier, which saved his life when the roundup of the Imperial family began. These are the memoirs of her childhood, a glittering version of solitary confinement, and young adult life. Her father was banished for marrying without the Czar's permission, which left Marie and her brother to be brought up by her uncle, the military governor of Moscow. After her uncle's assassination in 1905, her aunt arranged a marriage with a Swedish prince whom Marie saw a few times before the wedding. The marriage was disastrous, and a divorce was arranged, quickly and quietly. Marie's young son stayed in Sweden. Charity was an acceptable occupation for the women of the aristocracy, but Marie became a qualified nurse and spent much of the early part of WWI in field hospitals. The last part of the book contains her account of the final tense days of the Romanovs, her second marriage, and her escape through the Ukraine

"Before there is a blueprint there must be a vision, whether it be for a battleship, a cathedral or a world society. This is the book of a vision of a world in which a man may be proud to live. Many architects will make many blueprints before the structure of this vision is erected, but it is the wonder of our war-torn world that never have so many men and women in so many lands been hopeful and determined that this vision become reality. The London Observer remarked recently, "Mr. Wallace's voice is that of the oldest and simplest American idea. 'Men and women can not be really free until they have plenty to eat and time and ability to read and think and talk things over.' His speeches and writings of the past year comprise a manifesto supplementary to the Four Freedoms." Here for the first time, Mr. Wallace's ideas for the future are drawn together in one volume. Here is the general pattern, parts of which have formed the basis of his speeches of the last year. It includes particularly the text of two speeches which have commanded the widest attention -- "The Price of Free World Victory" and "Russia" -- and a very recent one which is available nowhere else, "George -- a Commencement Address." This may prove to be one of the fundamental books of our time. The plans may be long in maturing, may be trimmed or throttled by fears and greeds but as long as the vision remains, men will find strength to struggle toward it. This book is short. All the great documents of liberty seem to be short." --
