Patterns of Spanish pronunciation, a drillbook by J. Donald Bowen( Book )

27 editions published between 1960 and 1980 in English and Spanish and held by 486 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This drillbook concentrates on making the student aware of the nature of the differences between his English habits of speech and the Spanish habits he is trying to acquire. The extensive exercises are structured selectively in order of specific difficulties of pronunciation. In the major sections on intonation, vowels, and consonants, the authors rely on the development of several components to achieve mastery in the pronunciation of Spanish. They include: (1) notes about the differences between the comparable sounds of each language, (2) descriptions of the articulation of Spanish sounds not present in English, (3) the problems arranged in a hierarchy of importance from most important to least important, (4) a respelling of Spanish that symbolizes each problematic detail, (5) lists of items that illustrate the distribution of the sounds, and (6) extensive examples for classroom drill on all the problems examined. Adaptation in language teaching by Harold S Madsen( Book )

11 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The need to adapt or modify the use of given textbooks and other language teaching materials to fit the requirements of particular learning situations, and even particular students, is widely recognized. This volume presents a systematic approach to adaptation useful for methods courses as well as for the experienced teacher or curriculum planner. As the first principle of effective adaptation, maintenance of congruence between a variety of factors is stressed; these factors include the teaching materials, the methodology and objectives of the course, student characteristics, the character of the language being taught, and the personality and style of the teacher. The discussion is divided into four main sections: (1) "Contextualization: The Textbook and the Real World"; (2)"Usage Problems"; (3) "Language Variety"; and (4) "Administrative and Pedagogical Concerns." The appendices present complementary studies on testbook analysis and evaluation for particular teaching-learning situations: (1) "Adapting Materials in Context," by A. Hilferty; (2) "Evaluation of Foreign Language Textbooks: a Simplified Procedure," by M. N. Bruder; (3) "Evaluating Beginning Textbooks," by A. Tucker; and (4) "Graph for Estimating Readability-Extended," by E. Fry. (Amh)
Beginning Tagalog; a course for speakers of English by Philippine Center for Language Study( Book )

11 editions published between 1963 and 1984 in English and Multiple languages and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The two major goals of this comprehensive course are--first, an oral control of tagalog and sufficient mastery of its structure to continue independent study, and second, presentation of up-to-date information about the social customs, standards, values, and aspirations of the filipino people so that the language learner may participate fully in filipino society. With fairly intensive class scheduling and assuming laboratory and homework assignments, the 25 units can be covered in one year. Each unit includes--(1) a basic dialog to be memorized, (2) brief cultural and structural explanations to be read outside of class, (3) pronunciation exercises based on a contrastive study of tagalog and english, (4) a "drills and grammar" section where individual grammar points are presented and intensively drilled, and (5) cumulative, visual-cue, and comprehension-response drills. The readings, which are to start with unit xii, appear in a separate volume, "intermediate readings in tagalog." The other volumes produced in this materials project are a reference grammar and a tagalog/english-english/tagalog student dictionary. Complete tape recordings for the dialogs, drills, and readings have been prepared as well. This text is published by the university of california press, 233 fulton street, berkeley, california 94720 ($6.00). (jd)
Patterns of English pronunciation by J. Donald Bowen( Book )

20 editions published between 1975 and 1987 in English and Japanese and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This pronunciation manual for the study of English as a foreign/second language can be used with beginning as well as intermediate or advanced students. The text is organized in three parts or cycles. Part One is an introduction to selected features of pitch and stress and an inventory of the vowels and consonants, with contextual illustrations of contrasts that have proved generally to be problems. It includes the following chapters: (1) "Elements of Intonation"; (2) "The English Vowel System"; and (3) "The English Consonants." Part Two presents some of the patterns commonly associated with combinations of features of intonation, vowels, and consonants, including the effects of vowels and consonants. It includes the following chapters: (4) "English Stress and Intonation Patterns"; (5) "English Vowel Patterns"; and (6) "English Consonant Patterns." Part Three recycles the same sequence on the construct level, with chapter 7 devoted to suprasegmental and chapter 8 to segmental constructions. Chapter 9 offers assorted exercises in which a synthesis of features and patterns is attempted in more complex environments and constructions. (Author/CFM)
