Reading skill can be acquired in a natural and informal manner and in a variety of settings ranging from the school to the streets. Anyone who wants to learn to read or to develop his reading ability can do so if the following conditions are satisfied: (1) a person who knows how to read and wants to share his knowledge is willing to help. (2) Basic materials--pencils, pens, and printed materials--are available. (3) The learner feels secure enough in the learning environment to make mistakes and ask questions. (4) The culture and background of the learner are respected and used. (5) The learner has reasonably intact senses and the ability to use some language. A description of the reading process, a wide variety of games and teaching techniques, lists of materials, and alternatives to standardized tests are provided, both as alternatives to more traditional classroom approaches to teaching reading and as aids for the nonprofessional tutor of reading. Should we burn Babar? : essays on children's literature and the power of stories by Herbert R Kohl( Book )

18 editions published between 1995 and 2007 in English and held by 1,215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The title essay, a consideration of Babar the elephant, raises the question of what to do with a charming and widely-loved book whose messages, nonetheless, need to be challenged. Also included in this volume is Kohl's acclaimed essay on Rosa Parks, available here for the first time in book form. In it Kohl points out the subtle, but real, racism inherent in the usual telling of the Rosa Parks story and offers another, more truthful version entitled "She Would Not Be Moved." This retelling illustrates how Mrs. Parks's actions were part of an organized struggle for freedom, not a mere personal act of frustration. Throughout, Kohl provides new perspectives on well-known children's stories, highlighting instances of racism, sexism, and condescension that detract from the tale being told. He provides strategies for detecting bias in other works for young people and offers powerful ideas for better ways to tell children stories

"I won't learn from you" : and other thoughts on creative maladjustment by Herbert R Kohl( Book )

5 editions published between 1991 and 1995 in English and held by 678 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Creative Maladjustment and the Struggle for Public Education" is inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.'s call for creative maladjustment to an unjust society, and deals with the ways in which one can lead a positive life and learn new ways of maintaining opposition and resistance. "Excellence, Equality, and Equity" explores the relationship between these three crucial - and often confused - concepts. "Uncommon Differences" is about the way in which notions such as political correctness have been used to distract us from the central concerns of public education, including educating the poor, developing cultural diversity within the schools, and undoing the stigmatization of students who do not conform. It is about what public education in America can become. Written in Kohl's hallmark conversational style and employing the case examples that make his writing so compelling, these essays are at the forefront of current thinking on urban education

A grain of poetry : how to read contemporary poems and make them a part of your life by Herbert R Kohl( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 2000 in English and held by 547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In A Grain of Poetry, Herbert Kohl opens the door to communication with poetry - the whole range and variety of contemporary poetic voices. While reading poetry doesn't have to involve making critical judgments, it does require knowing how to read modern works and how to be patient and give oneself over to the language and sentiments of a poem. Rather than provide a critical analysis of "good" poetry, Kohl presents a series of guideposts to help everyone read poetry and discover those poems that inform and inspire them. In clear, direct language, he covers all of the essential - but often uncharted - paths to understanding poetry: form and structure, line breaks and pauses, rhythm and melody, imagery, and recitation
