Paul Léautaud (1872-1956) werd geboren als zoon van Firmin Léautaud (souffleur) en Jeanne Forestier (actrice). Zijn moeder verliet hem al drie dagen na zijn geboorte. Tijdens zijn kinderjaren ziet hij haar sporadisch en blijft zij voor hem een vreemde. Wanneer Paul negen is vindt er een ontmoeting plaats in een hotelkamer, waar hij haar halfnaakt in bed aantreft en zij hem tegen zich aan drukt. De verleidelijke, mooie Jeanne maakt een verpletterende indruk op hem. Als hij in de jaren daarna aan haar denkt is het altijd aan dit moment. Pas twintig jaar later ontmoet hij haar weer, dit keer in het huis van zijn grootmoeder in Calais. Aanleiding is het sterfbed van zijn tante Fanny. Met zijn moeder, die hem aanvankelijk niet herkent, brengt hij een paar `intieme dagen door. In de vertrouwelijkheid van het moment beloven zij elkaar niet meer uit het oog te verliezen, en via brieven in contact te blijven. De briefwisseling tussen moeder en zoon begint in een stemming van euforie, maar na enige dissonanties volgt uiteindelijk een definitieve breuk.
