20 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 724 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Five major stages in the process of thesis and dissertation writing are illustrated with multiple examples from the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, and such allied fields as education, social work, and business administration. This book guides students through the process of planning, researching, and writing the final version of theses and dissertations. Five major stages of the process are illustrated with multiple examples from the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, and such allied fields as education, social work, and business administration. The first stage, Preparing the Way, describes problems and alternative solutions in working with faculty advisors and in searching the professional literature. Stage 2 explains how to find good research topics and define them clearly for presentation to faculty advisors. Stage 3 describes problems often encountered in data collection and suggests solutions for those problems. At Stage 4, students learn ways of organizing and interpreting information, including classification schemes, verbal and statistical summaries, and methods of deriving meaning from data. The final stage, Presenting the Finished Product, offers guidelines for thesis and dissertation writing and for publishing the results in such media as books, journal articles, and popular periodicals. Stage 5 also includes a chapter about how students can mount a convincing defense of their work during a faculty committee's final oral examination session. - Publisher
Creative curriculum leadership by Dale L Brubaker( Book )

11 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and held by 634 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"School administrators everywhere experience external pressures, such as the demand to "raise test scores." All too often, their reaction is to apply a quick fix - but simply reacting means that deeper problems remain." "Higher test scores can make you appear to be a winner yet do little for your core self-esteem, and nobody wins if you're left feeling hollow inside. To avoid burnout, school administrators must nurture their own self-esteem, while using the necessary political skills to realistically deal with external pressures." "Dale Brubaker tells why educators need more than the traditional top-down, get-higher-test-scores approach to curriculum. He describes the benefits of developing your own "inner curriculum." He also shows the importance of attending to both political and spiritual power in becoming a creative curriculum leader." "Creative Curriculum Leadership includes self-appraisal inventories to help you recognize where you have been, where you are now, and where you would like to be in the future - in other words, how you can remake your professional life. The secret is creative leadership." "Brubaker shows you how to create settings and learning communities that empower people to identify and use their talents. Creative curriculum leaders ask: "How can I understand myself better so I can enjoy my work and my life more?" and, "How can I improve the settings that are important to me?" If you nurture your own inner curriculum, it will serve as a foundation for the outer curricula. Equally important, you must create outer curricula that boost the inner curriculum." "Field-tested case studies are included to stimulate thinking and discussion. You can apply ideas from each chapter to your own leadership setting. These case studies bridge theory and practice. They're your springboard to becoming a more creative curriculum leader."--Jacket

Creative survival in educational bureaucracies by Dale L Brubaker( Book )

7 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In order to survive creativity in and change educational organizations, the decision-maker needs to understand how these organizations presently function. Educational organizations are discussed as sociopolitical systems and a conceptual framework is proposed for analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The five functions that educational organizations perform for students are identified and described: confinement, training, indoctrination, sorting, and providing the conditions for personal or self-development. Most educational organizations are based on a bureaucratic model; a case is built for a new organizational model that retains the bureaucratic form for governance functions while using the professional form for curriculum and instruction matters. A number of operational guides are offered to aid the decision-maker in getting the most out of his organization as it is presently structured, while at the same time working toward a new organizational model. Staying on track : an educational leader's guide to preventing derailment and ensuring personal and organizational success by Dale L Brubaker( Book )

9 editions published between 1996 and 2007 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The term "derailment" refers to situations in which individuals fall short of their career goals or groups fail to meet their organizational objectives. This book sets forth strategies to prevent derailment, both at the individual and organizational level. Following the prologue in the form of a cautionary tale, chapter 1 provides self-assessment checklists for vice principals, principals, and superintendents. Chapter 2 offers examples of derailment situations drawn from a survey of 250 school leaders across the United States and from the journal entries of 150 current and aspiring superintendents. Anti-derailment recommendations are offered in chapter 3. The fourth chapter describes the important role of staff development in helping educational leaders avoid and deal productively with derailment. The fifth chapter focuses on the principal's role in shared decision making and teacher-leader development. One table is included. The appendix contains resources and case studies on organizational communication. (Contains 44 references.) (Lmi)

Teacher as decision maker : real-life cases to hone your people skills by Dale L Brubaker( Book )

6 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 312 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"More than other professionals, teachers must learn through on-the-job experience, using both their successes and failures as road maps for future actions and decisions. Every day, the modern teacher must resolve countless conflicts and contradictions, both inside and outside the classroom. As the complexity of our school systems increases, teachers find it more and more difficult to make informed, problem-solving decisions that will increase their effectiveness as educators and help their students concentrate on learning." "In Teacher as Decision Maker, authors Dale L. Brubaker and Lawrence H. Simon first explain how schools function as social systems. Then they present a series of case studies and exercises drawn from the day-to-day experience of teachers dealing with students, parents, administrators, and other teachers." "To capture the real world of schools, the authors use two different kinds of cases for study. The first is a philosophical one and requires teachers to acknowledge their own personal orientation toward teaching. After presenting each philosophical case situation, the authors describe two responses at different ends of a continuum -- from extreme essentialist to extreme progressive. Teachers then decide which response is closest to their orientation and whether they are responding consistently in all cases." "In the second type of scenario, which is called "technical," teachers must select the best of several possible responses. The authors provide an analysis of each of the choices, identify the best response for a given situation, and tell why the others are not appropriate." "These well-documented examples will help educators at all levels hone their people skills and gain a clearer understanding of the many important variables that are so crucial to making effective decisions." "Teacher as Decision Maker is not a jargon-filled manual that spoon-feeds the reader prepackaged "right answers" to dry, theoretical problems. It is a lively, stimulating guide, filled with real-life situations and creative solutions to the scores of decision-making dilemmas a teacher faces each day. Book jacket."--Jacket
