Watteau, an artist of the eighteenth century by Marianne Roland Michel( Book )

7 editions published between 1984 and 1986 in English and French and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The languid grace of Watteau's figures, in his drawings and in his paintings, such as Les Plaisirs du bal is the most evident proof of his creative genius. Undoubtedly one of the greatest artists of the eighteenth century, his influence extended far beyond his own short lifetime: he died in 1721 at the age of thirty-seven. His invention of the fete galante, peopled with elegant couples dressed in brilliant clothes, who flirt or stroll through idyllic landscapes, assured his success in his own lifetime, and his exquisite sense of draughtsmanship made his drawings avidly collected. Yet of Watteau the man we know scarcely anything: the accounts of his contemporaries are often vague and circumstantial, however enthusiastic, and our view of him has in the past been coloured by the romantic embellishments of nineteenth-century writers, who by identifying Watteau with his own subject matter made of him a melancholy and unhappy artist. Marianne Roland Michel's book shows the fallacy of such a view, as well as dealing honestly with the problems of his life and work. What emerges is the portrait of an artist of consummate technical skill in drawing, with an independent and original sense of subject, drawn from the theatre and from everyday life. The questions of the chronology of the works themselves, the role of the double copies, and relations between Watteau and contemporary dealers and collectors, are made clear. It is above all Watteau's sheer ability that triumphs above the biographical and technical questions about him, fascinating as they are. The subtlety and vigour of his drawings, particularly those of women, and the fluid and delicate composition of his paintings, such as the Charmes de la vie in London or the Amour au théâtre français in Berlin, or the Fêtes vénitiennes in Edinburgh, make Watteau undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and creative artists ever. -- Inside jacket flap
Watteau, music, and theater by Antoine Watteau( Book )

8 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Focusing on both the visual and performing arts, Watteau, Music, and Theater explores the rich connections between painting and theater at a time when Louis XIV had reigned in France for some six decades. Jean-Antoine Watteau (French, 16841721) and other early eighteenth-century French artists are central to this time of lush artistry. This volume delves into the fascinating developments in music and theater that took place in Paris after the young Watteau arrived in the vibrant French capital. Framed by an introduction by Pierre Rosenberg de lAcadémie française, Honorary President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and a companion essay by Georgia J. Cowart, Watteaus influence on culture and art during this time period is unquestionable. Fifteen major paintings by Watteau and a number of his drawings demonstrate the ways in which the painters vision reflects his involvement with actors, musicians, and the stage. The works discussed range from enchanting single figures to animated assemblages of players from the French and Italian theatrical tradition

Watteau : the drawings by Pierre Rosenberg( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Antoine Watteau (1684 1721) produced some of the most seductive drawings in Western art. This book, published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, reproduces his finest examples, revealing the delicacy and freedom of execution that so impressed early commentators and had such a profound effect on subsequent generations of artists, notably François Boucher and Jean Honore; Fragonard. Well known art historians Pierre Rosenberg and Louis Antoine Prat examine these masterly studies, focusing on the artist's development as a draftsman, the techniques that he perfected, and the fascinating role that drawing played in his work. The illustrations, which include recently discovered works, are superbly reproduced

No other artist made such a mark on 18th-century painting north of the Alps as Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). In a creative phase lasting little more than a decade, he created not the large forceful works artists are often remembered for, but rather small-scale and playful pictures full of quiet charm and gentle wit. He was able to exert artistic influence because, living in a period of upheaval and decline at the end of the era of Louis XIV, he had a presentiment of what was to come: a refinement of the mind and sensory perception, the Enlightenment, and with it new ideas of social justice. The developments that led to the French Revolution at the end of the century are already present in embryo beneath the surface merriment of Watteau's painting
