Linguistics: a revolution in teaching by
Neil Postman(
Book
)
22 editions published between 1966 and 1978 in English and Undetermined and held by 996 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This handbook of modern linguistics has been prepared for the adult layman or teacher who needs a general background in linguistics as well as an understanding of the "linguistic approach" as it is being introduced in english teaching today. The authors have taken the stand that linguistics is here to stay--along with the "new math," the "new science," and the "new social studies." Part one deals with the various aspects of linguistics as a discipline, and the importance of its contributions "when it is defined as the use of scientific processes of inquiry into the role of language in human affairs." Part two discusses grammar, usage, semantics, lexicography and dialect geography, linguistics and reading, and related fields such as metalinguistics and psycholinguistics. A two-page chart indicates the major linguists from 1900 to the present time, listed according to their particular field of linguistic study. A selected bibliography is also included. This book is published by dell publishing co., Inc., 750 third avenue, new york, N.Y. 10017 ($1.75). (amm)

How to Recognize a Good School. Fastback Series, No. 30 by
Neil Postman(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The authors attempt to indicate some of the background and consequences of the school reform movement. Hopefully, readers can learn what are currently the most important ideas that infuse the school scene with so much vitality. Toward that end, the authors have divided the report into "a History of Hollering," a minihistory of school criticism circa 1955-70 aimed at providing an account of why so many people have been saying so many critical things about school; and "What is School?," A statement of how the institution of school operates and the distinguishing features between the institution's intractable functions and its changing (and changeable) conventions. A third section tries to suggest the palpable effects of school criticism by specifying the ways in which out best teachers and administrators are recreating the conventions of the American Public School.
