Scholars in the making : the development of graduate and professional students by Joseph Katz( Book )

9 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In spite of the important and almost exalted role of graduate and professional education, little is known about this form of advanced training as a psychological, social, and educational process. This book brings together and analyzes major research efforts aimed at an improved understanding of these elements and suggests ways that graduate and professional education might change. Central questions are: What is the process by which certain people become America's intellectual and professional elite?; What are the key elements in the process, from the point of deciding who is admitted, through the entire training and socialization process?; And What are the implications of this process for individual development and social needs? Authors whose work is examined include Nancy E. Adler, Leonard L. Baird, Mary Jo Clark, Birt L. Duncan, Seymour L. Halleck, Kay Hartshorn, Marjorie M. Lozoff, Nevitt Sanford, and Anne Robinson Taylor, as well as the book's authors. (Editor/MSE)

Chapter 4, "Images of Women in Women's Magazines," by Peggy Comstock, presents a content analysis of a selected number of women's magazines in terms of the attitudes toward education, career, and home that are held or presumably held, by middle-class adult women. Chapter 5, "Selected Bibliography on Women: 1950-1969," by Peggy Comstock, presents a survey of an annotated bibliography of the literature on the educational and occupational situation of adult women.
