Gerhard Richter : forty years of painting by Robert Storr( Book )

16 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and held by 1,191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerhard Richter is one of the most influential painters working today. Since the early 1960s, his work has received much attention and many international accolades. Richter's diverse body of work calls into question such widely held assumptions as the importance of stylistic consistency, individual artistic sensibility, spontaneous creativity, and the impact of technology and media imagery to traditional studio methods and formats. Unlike many artists today, he has explored these issues mainly through the medium of painting, challenging it to meet the demands posed by new forms of conceptual art. His varied output ranges from austere photo-based figurative realism of the early 1960s to brightly colored gestural abstractions of the early 1980s and encompasses such startling works as his brilliant cycle of black-and-white paintings of the Baader-Meinhof group, thought-provoking monochrome abstractions and banal Pop images, delicate landscapes and intimate portraits. As an artist, Richter has assumed a critical distance from vanguardists and conservatives alike regarding what painting should be; and the result has been a vital renewal of painting itself." "This book accompanies the first comprehensive exhibition of the seventy-year-old German artist's paintings ever to appear in New York and includes beautiful color plates and duotones of some two hundred canvases in a broad representation of his forty years of painting. In addition, this volume contains a substantial recent interview with Richter, a chronology, selected bibliography, and comprehensive exhibition history. The retrospective this book accompanies was organized by Robert Storr, Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. After its showing in New York, this extraordinary exhibition will be seen in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C."--Jacket

Gerhard Richter : Early Work, 1951-1972 brings together new studies of the early career of Gerhard Richter by an international group of scholars concerned with art in the Cold War. Born in Dresden in 1932, educated under the prevailing doctrine of SOcialist Realism at the Dresden Academy of Art and later retrained after his emigration to the West at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Richter uniquely embodies the division of Germany during the Cold War. The authors approach the Cold War context from a variety of angles that include the social and political histories of a divided Germany, the conflicted development of Soviet Socialist Realism in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), a Cold War visuality integrating pre- and post-resettlement works, and the archival dimension of Richter's output in relation to his Atlas. The essays offer a new view of Richter's early work by taking a closer look at his formation in the GDR in the 1950s and at his first works in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the 1960s, alongside the artist's personal involvement in the representation of his work in archives, exhibitions, and catalogues from the early years in Dresden up to the present day. Although Gerhard Richter counts as perhaps the best known and most widely exhibited contemporary artist form Germany, his reception has mostly neglected the artist's formation in Dresden due to the Cold War division of Germany and the artist's own withholding of his early work from the public. All of the authors assembled here bring the gradual and incomplete resurrection of the record to bear on selected works--the murals from the 1950s, the photo-paintings and exhibitions of the 1960s, or the collaborations during these periods--and on selected practices, such as the calculated display of the artist's sources as a work of art in Atlas, or the establishment of the Gerhard Richter Archive in Dresden in 2007/ The essays in this volume evolved from papers delivered at a symposium held at the Getty Center in conjunction with the exhibition From Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter: German Paintings from Dresden at the J. Paul Getty Museum

September : a history painting by Gerhard Richter by Robert Storr( Book )

3 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerhard Richter is one of the most influential artists of modern times. His painting 'September' is the response to the bombing of the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, made some four years after the event. Eminent American critic and curator Robert Storr, who has had a long working relationship with Richter, explores both the painting and the event itself, as filtered through an eyewitness account of what happened in New York that day. Through description, comparative illustrations, and references to precedents in modern art, literature, and warfare, Storr analyzes the image's meaning and how it adds to a current in Richter's career that questions evocations of traumatic and controversial moments in history"--Page 4 of cover

Gerhard Richter : the Cage paintings by Robert Storr( Book )

5 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 and lives and works in Cologne. His continuing commitment to, and exploration of, the medium of painting has made him one of the most important artists of our time. The Cage paintings, a cycle of large-scale works named after the American avant-garde composer John Cage, were displayed for the first time at the Venice Siennale in 2007. They represent the latest highlight in a career that spans more than four decades." "Leading critic Robert Storr considers the importance of the Cage paintings within Richter's practice and within the wider context of abstract art. A series of extraordinary, detailed photographs document the development of each painting, day by day, and show the artist at work on these monumental canvases, giving unique insight into his working methods." "Including illustrations of comparative works, archival photographs and studio views, Cage: 6 Paintings by Gerhard Richter is essential reading for anyone interested in the life and work of one of the world's greatest living painters."--Jacket
Gerhard Richter by Gertrud Koch( Book )

14 editions published in 1995 in 5 languages and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The huge Richter retrospective that closed in 1994 in Madrid, after showing in Paris, Bonn, and Stockholm, has only confirmed the key position of the artist among his contemporaries. This book forgoes the accepted avenues through art history, genre theory, and materials, seeking a new approach to the questions that continue to haunt Richter's work. By reconsidering the relations between photography and painting, by analyzing the historical, social, and political elements brought into certain works, as well as the relations between romantic "nature philosophy" and Richter's landscapes, the volume demonstrates how the development of the pictorial material leads to a more open notion of the "image". Richter's oeuvre is clearly linked to certain traditional categories of painting, but the image as he defines it most often eludes those categories. It is this new definition that must be analyzed."--BOOK JACKET

"On October 5, 2012, the German national newspaper Die Welt published its daily issue - but things looked ... different. Quieter. The sensations of the day, forgotten as soon as they’re read, were missing, replaced with an unprecedented calm, extracted with care from the chaos of the contemporary. That calm was the work of Gerhard Richter, who had been granted control over Die Welt for that single day, taking over and imprinting all thirty pages of the newspaper with his personal stamp: images from quiet moments amid unquiet times, the demotion of politics from its primary position, the privileging of the private and personal over the public, and, above all, artful, moving contrasts between sharpness and softness. He had created an unprecedented work of mass art. Among the many people to praise the work was writer Alexander Kluge, who instantly began writing stories to accompany Richter’s images. This book, the second collaboration between Kluge and Richter, brings their stories and images together, along with new words and artworks created specifically for this volume. The result, Dispatches from Moments of Calm, is a beautiful, meditative interval in the otherwise unremitting press of everyday life, a masterpiece by two acclaimed artists working at the height of their powers"--Publisher's website
