Principles of literary criticism by I. A Richards( Book )

283 editions published between 1924 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 3,099 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why one opinion upon literature or life is not as good as another, why some experiences are worth while and others not, why poetry and art are important, are the chief questions discussed in this book. Such topics are often treated without sufficient attention to the distorting influence of language. The author's Poetics has been based upon a study of the emotional use of words, and through this approach a clear answer to many perplexing problems is forthcoming. A whole generation of critics, teachers and students of literature has found this book of extraordinary value

English through pictures : book 2 and A second workbook of English by I. A Richards( )

53 editions published between 1957 and 2005 in English and Spanish and held by 1,713 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation The three pocketbooks comprising the 'English Through Pictures Series' are the remarkable invention of I A Richards and Christine Gibson, who designed them to help the learner speak, read and write English in the quickest and clearest possible way -- through pictures. The authors have made a careful selection of the most widely useful English words, choosing those with the power to define other words, and have put them to work in key patterns that offer the learner the ability to communicate successfully in English. Book 1 contains a vocabulary of 250 such words, with an additional 500 developed in Book 2; these 750 words are then used in Book 3 to build a command of 1000 words which, by their defining power, hold the possibility of understanding as much as another 20,000 words of English. Throughout 'English Through Pictures', responsibility for learning is placed directly on the learner, who from the very start enjoys the ability to put essential words to work creating key sentence patterns where meaning is clearly shown in pictures. These simplified drawings allow learners to focus on the sentence and to enjoy growing confidence as they successfully take control of language, with the workbooks in Books 1 and 2 challenging and reinforcing their growing competence as both speakers and readers. Motivated and inspired, learners will soon find to their delight that fluent communication in English -- the common language of today's world -- lies well within their grasp. 'English Through Pictures' has already been used successfully by millions of learners in over forty countries

The philosophy of rhetoric by I. A Richards( Book )

60 editions published between 1936 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 1,485 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our communication is limitedby misunderstanding. Rhetoric, as Professor Richards defines it, is the study of misunderstanding and its remedies. The conventional rules of the old rhetoric and the formulations of scientific language have narrow application to conversational speech; Professor Richard's definition of rhetoric is based on a practical question: how do words work in discourse? To answer this question, he examines the interaction of words with each other and with their contexts, showing how a continual synthesis of meaning, or "principle of metaphor", gives life to discussion. It is through comprehension of the way meaning changes in discourse that we can better control and animate our use of words, and so decrease misunderstanding. -- Product Description

Plato's Republic by Plato( Book )

18 editions published between 1966 and 1972 in 3 languages and held by 590 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the greatest works of philosophy, political theory, and literature ever produced, Plato's Republic has shaped Western thought for thousands of years and remains as relevant today as when it was written during the fourth century B.C. Republic begins by posing a central question: "What is justice, and why should we be just, especially when the wicked often seem happier and more successful?" For Plato, the answer lies with the ways people, groups, and institutions organize and behave. A brilliant inquiry into the problems of constructing the perfect state and the roles education, the arts, family, and religion should play in our lives, Republic employs picturesque settings, sharply outlined characters, and conversational dialogue to drive home the philosopher's provocative arguments
