Lines of thought : drawing from Michelangelo to now by Isabel Seligman( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Looking at works from a range of different artists and their various approaches, this book examines the process and practice of drawing, showcasing artworks from 15th- and 16th-century masters right up to artists working today. In arranging them not by period or style, but by the types of thinking that give rise to them, readers gain fresh insights into the thought processes of some of the world's greatest artists. This thematic rather than chronological structure allows us to place historical drawings side-by-side with modern and contemporary works, to show how artists from widely differing times and places have all used drawing to record, explore and develop ideas. The accompanying exhibition, 'Lines of Thought: Michelangelo to Bridget Riley. Drawings from the British Museum', will tour to venues associated with art schools around the UK, and internationally, to inspire students to draw. The exhibition and this book include highlights of the British Museum's Prints and Drawings collection, as well as some lesser-known contemporary works. Exhibition: Poole Museum and Art Gallery (September 3-November 6, 2016); The Brynmor Jones Library Art Gallery, University of Hull (January 1-February, 2017); Ulster Museum, Belfast (March 12-May 5, 2017); New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe (May-September 2017); RISD Museum, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence (October 2917-January 2018)
Bridget Riley : learning from Seurat by Bridget Riley( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1959, Riley's copy of Seurat's The Bridge at Courbevoie (1886-87) offered the artist a new understanding of colour and tone, which led her to produce her first major works of pure abstraction during the early 1960s. This volume presents Riley's paintings with this key work by Seurat in the museum's collection. Brought together for the first time, it demonstrates a shared preoccupation with perception; at pivotal points throughout three decades of Riley's career. Alongside full-colour illustrations, it includes an introductory text by Karen Serres and Barnaby Wright, an interview with the artist by Éric de Chassey, as well as two essays written by Riley that offer her insights on Seurat's importance to her own practice. Exhibition: The Courtauld Gallery, London (17.09.2015-17.01.2016)

Bridget Riley by Bridget Riley( Book )

"Bridget Riley is one of Britain's most celebrated artists, and her career has been distinguished by a series of remarkable innovations. She first attracted critical attention with the dazzling black-and-white paintings she began to make in 1961. Her participation in the seminal exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1965 and her triumph at the Venice Biennale in 1968 - when she became the first living British painter to win the International Prize for painting - established her as an artist of the first rank." "Bridget Riley surveys the artist's entire career and includes key examples of all phases of her work. It offers the opportunity both to review many early, celebrated paintings and to see these afresh in the context of recent works in which light, colour, movement and space are drawn into fresh and unexpected relationships. Numerous preparatory working studies are reproduced to illuminate the artist's complex and fascinating working processes." "Essays from Paul Moorhouse, Richard Shiff and Robert Kudielka provide an overview of her art and career, along with new insights into the relation of Riley's work to theories of aesthetics and perception."--Jacket
