The Korean diaspora : historical and sociological studies of Korean immigration and assimilation in North America by Hyung-chan Kim( Book )

10 editions published between 1971 and 1977 in English and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This anthology presents some results of recent research on Korean immigration to and assimilation in America. The essays address three major questions concerned with problems of immigration and assimilation: (1) What caused the immigration of Koreans to the Hawaiian Islands and the United States mainland? (2) How has the Korean experience in America been essentially different from that of other immigrant groups, particularly the Japanese and the Chinese? And (3) How successful have Korean immigrants and their descendants been in adjusting to American culture and society? For many years, sociologists and historians in America have studied the problems of assimilation from two major theoretical perspectives, that of acculturation or cultural assimilation, and structural assimilation. A series of studies included in this anthology apply either or both of these perspectives to the investigation of social and cultural factors considered decisive in facilitating the assimilation of Korean immigrants. An essay on the availability of materials for the study of Korean immigrants in the United States is also included. (Author/AM)

Korean Americans are a North American ethnic minority. This file is made up of seventeen documents that span the mid-nineteenth century through the mid-1980s. The documents cover issues of immigrant history and adaptation, entrepreneurs and business, women and kinship. General history and survey of Korean-Americans are found in Kim, H.; Ryu; and Choy. Studies centered on the Korean community in Chicago discuss social and cultural adjustment and the importance of the family and kinship in this process. Other local studies look at the establishment of the Korean community in New York City, social networks in two Georgian Korean communities, and family and kinship networks in the Los Angeles. Several studies examine the changing status and roles of Korean women in the United States, and the particular role they play in maintaining ethnic identity. The rest of the studies examine Korean- American entrepreneurship and business and the work patterns of Korean families
