Clearly written and easy to use, it teaches the skills that are essential to the success of any research project." "Wayne Booth, Gregory Colomb, and Joseph Williams chart every stage of the research process, from finding a topic and generating research questions about it to marshalling evidence, constructing arguments, creating a first draft, and revising that draft for a final report that meets the needs of a community of readers."--Jacket
The rhetoric of fiction by Wayne C Booth( Book )

177 editions published between 1961 and 2012 in 9 languages and held by 3,448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rhetoric is the author's term for the means by which the writer makes known his vision to the reader and persuades him of its validity; and he demonstrates convincingly that there is no essential difference between ostentatiously rhetorical novelists like Fielding and Dickens, and the admired masters of impersonality--Flaubert, James, Joyce ... this is a major critical work which should be required reading for everyone concerned in the academic study of prose fiction." [Modern Language Review]

18 editions published between 1978 and 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The problems created by the competing claims of various schools of criticism for a unified view of meaning are examined in this book. Chapters deal with the following topics: the problem of the plurality of modes, Ronald Crane and the pluralism of discrete modes, Kenneth Burke's multiplication of perspectives, history as criticism and the plurality of histories in M. H. Abrams, the pursuit of understanding as a limit of pluralism, the reader and alien modes, and our many different businesses with art. An appendix contains a Hippocratic oath for the pluralist. Modern dogma and the rhetoric of assent by Wayne C Booth( Book )

17 editions published between 1974 and 1991 in English and held by 1,032 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When should I change my mind? What can I believe and what must I doubt? In this new "philosophy of good reasons" Wayne C. Booth exposes five dogmas of modernism that have too often inhibited efforts to answer these questions. Modern dogmas teach that "you cannot reason about values" and that "the job of thought is to doubt whatever can be doubted," and they leave those who accept them crippled in their efforts to think and talk together about whatever concerns them the most. They have willed upon us a "befouled rhetorical climate" in which people are driven to two self-destructive extremes--defenders of reason becoming confined to ever narrower notions of logical or experimental proof and defenders of "values" becoming more and more irresponsible in trying to defend the heart, the gut, or the gonads. Booth traces the consequences of modernist assumptions through a wide range of inquiry and action: in politics, art, music, literature, and in personal efforts to find "identity" or a "self." In casting doubt on systematic doubt, the author finds that the dogmas are being questioned in almost every modern discipline. Suggesting that they be replaced with a rhetoric of "systematic assent," Booth discovers a vast, neglected reservoir of "good reasons"--many of them known to classical students of rhetoric, some still to be explored. These "good reasons" are here restored to intellectual respectability, suggesting the possibility of widespread new inquiry, in all fields, into the question, "When should I change my mind?" -- Back cover

The rhetoric of rhetoric : the quest for effective communication by Wayne C Booth( Book )

22 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in English and held by 648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"After exploring and combating the various pejorative definitions of "rhetoric" and briefly tracing its history, Booth explores the consequences of bad rhetoric in education, in politics, and in the media. A few cures for bad rhetoric are offered, and a final chapter investigates the possibility of reducing harmful conflict by practicing a rhetoric that depends on deep listening by both sides. The key example used is the warfare between science and religion."--Jacket

The knowing most worth doing : essays on pluralism, ethics, and religion by Wayne C Booth( Book )

5 editions published in 2010 in English and Polish and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this final volume of Booth's selected essays, appropriately titled The Knowing Most Worth Doing, after Booth's earlier edited collection, The Knowledge Most Worth Having. (1967), Walter Jost, in collaboration with the author, has gathered an indispensable collection of his former teacher's thinking across a wide variety of fields and disciplines, from ethics to religion and from rhetorical criticism to the philosophical plurality of possible critical modes. The selections begin with three diverse, profound discussions of the need for plural perspectives in the contemporary world, proceed to accessible yet learned readings of the ethics of literature, and end with wonderful speculations on the nature of, and human need for, religious thought. Gathered from various journals and books over several decades, these "fugitive" essays will prove their enduring value because they speak frankly and without pretensions to problems that continue to plague us, and to aspirations that continue to draw a new generation into the knowing most worth doing. In these discussions, knowledge is understood as an activity and a way of life, one that can be embraced by all people in many different ways."--Jacket

6 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For the Love of It is the story not only of the intimate struggle between Wayne Booth and his cello but also of the larger struggle between a society obsessed with success and payoff and individuals who choose challenging hobbies that yield no payoff except the love of it. This fundamental opposition leads Booth into diverse meditations on how amateuring relates to all other loves and pleasures. In his celebration of how the amateur's laboring can blossom, he thus joins a long line of thinkers who have puzzled over the meanings of "fun," "work," and "love.""--Jacket
