Paralanguage and kinesics : (nonverbal communication), with a bibliography by Mary Ritchie Key( Book )

12 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 677 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nonverbal communication is an important and little-understood aspect of human communication. This book deals primarily with two aspects of nonverbal communication: paralanguage and kinesics. "Paralanguage" includes vocalizations such as hissing, shushing, and whistling, as well as speech modifications such as quality of voice (sepulchral, whiny, giggly) or hesitations and speed in talking. The term "kinesics" refers to all body movements. Following an introduction to the field of nonverbal communication, the book provides discussions of the following topics: a model for describing nonverbal behavior in communication; paralanguage; kinesics; sensory communication; the function of silence; the effects upon nonverbal communication of the contexts in which the communication occurs; ways in which individuals' patterns of nonverbal behavior are affected by such factors as their age, geographical location, historical era, and culture; sign language and other language substitutes; and methodology for research in nonverbal communication. The book includes a 60-page bibliography of related publications. (Gw)

19 editions published in 1982 in 3 languages and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is about communication. We are living in an era when essential communications and services are suspended, interrupted, and disturbed- yet unwanted communications- the junk mail and unsolicited telephone calls- continue to pour into our lives. The focus of this book is on extra-linguistic messages- nonverbal expressions that are part of every communicative/behavioral event. It is a collection of authors who are seeking to discover the structure of behavior in human communication and interaction with each other and with their environment
