The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud by Ernest Jones( Book )

118 editions published between 1953 and 2004 in 7 languages and held by 3,987 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is not intended to be a popular biography of Freud: several have been written already, containing serious distortions and untruths. Its aims are simply to record the main facts of Freud's life while they are still accessible, and--a more ambitious one--to try to relate his personality and the experiences of his life to the development of his ideas --Preface

Treatment of the neuroses; psychotherapy from rest cure to psychoanalysis by Ernest Jones( Book )

23 editions published between 1920 and 2014 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It being evident that the treatment of the neuroses is now engaging the interest of the medical profession to an extent never before approached, this has seemed an appropriate moment to publish a review of the various methods of treatment at our disposal, and, as the writer is in the peculiar position--at all events in this country--of having had a considerable experience with all the main methods, he has regarded it as a duty to undertake this task. The attempt has been made to lay stress on the positive aspects of each method, i.e. on the contribution they may have made to our knowledge or capacity to help, rather than on the negative ones, though a critical summary has been added in each case. Further, as many of the principles of treatment would have been unintelligible without reference to the theory on which they are based, it has been necessary to say something on the subject of pathology, and even, here and there, on that of symptomatology, the space devoted to these matters, however, having been reduced to a minimum. To avoid needless repetition the principles of psychopathology and of mental therapeutics have been dealt with at some length under one heading, the appropriate one of hysteria, so that the chapters on the other neuroses are correspondingly short"--Preface. Addresses on psycho-analysis by James Jackson Putnam( )

15 editions published between 1921 and 1951 in English and held by 251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The papers here collected into a single volume, which were written by Professor James J. Putnam, between 1909 and the end of his life, give a good picture of his relations to psychoanalysis. They show how he was at first occupied in correcting a provisional judgment which was based on insufficient knowledge; how he then accepted the essence of analysis, recognized its capacity for throwing a clear light upon the origin of human imperfections and failings, and how he was struck by the prospect of contributing towards the improvement of humanity along analytical lines; how he then became convinced by his own activities as a physician as to the truth of most of the psychoanalytical conclusions and postulates, and then in his turn bore witness to the fact that the physician who makes use of analysis understands far more about the sufferings of his patients and can do far more for them than was possible with the earlier methods of treatment; and finally how he began to extend beyond the limits of analysis, demanding that as a science it should be linked on to a particular philosophical system, and that its practice should be openly associated with a particular set of ethical doctrines"--Preface.
