Ranging from the attempts of the cave man to free himself from the tyranny of nature through magic and ritual, to the religious despotism of Byzantium, the author surveys freedom's gains and triumps, its losses and failures. In doing so, he provides the reader with new insight into the meaning and destiny of freedom in Western Civilization
Freedom in the modern world by Herbert J Muller( Book )

16 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 1,337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After discussing the forces that led inexorably to WWI and its aftermath, most tragically manifested in the rise of totalitarianism, the author moves on to analyze the impact of Western thought on the non-Western world. He concludes among other things, that in no society has the freedom to choose and to act on one's choice guaranteed that the choice will be the right one. He concentrates on those major developments which have affected our civilization in its entirety. The Industrial Revolution, the rise of capitalism, the movements toward popular government, socialism and nationalism are considered as they interacted with the revolutions in science, literature, the arts and education. In the same way, the diffuse Romantic Movement, the rise of popular culture, the unprecedented advances in physics, medicine and the social sciences are examined in the context of simultaneous political and economic ferment

This book discusses education (and its relevance) in the broadest sense, as not merely the formal training of students, but a process that all thoughtful people are engaged in throughout their lives. Searching questions are asked about basic attitudes. The main concern here is the quest for new values and life-styles and more satisfying modes of self-realization and self-expression. Nine chapters are included: The Relevance of the Humanities, The Uses and Abuses of History, a Hard Look at Ethics, a New Look at Freedom, The Uses of Science, The Uses of Tragedy, Democracy in America: Some Reconsiderations, The Portents of the Counter Culture, and An Old Liberal to the Youth. An index is included. (Author/CK)
The uses of English : guidelines for the teaching of English from the Anglo-American conference at Dartmouth College by Herbert J Muller( Book )

22 editions published between 1967 and 1971 in English and held by 945 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over 50 educators from america, england, and canada, reflecting diversified experiences, interests, and points of view, met for four weeks in the summer of 1966 at dartmouth college for the anglo-american seminar on the teaching of english, the first large-scale exchange between american and british educators on this basic subject. This report, intended for the general reader, is neither a systematic nor comprehensive review of the conference, but rather is a rendering of its shape--an attempt to capture its spirit of open exchange, scope of concerns, diversity of views, and tentative syntheses. The problems of defining what the legitimate subject matter and aims of english courses should include, of democratizing the classroom, and of matching the curriculum to the emotional and intellectual development of the child are the subjects of the first three chapters. The next four chapters deal with the more specific areas of teaching english grammar and usage, literature, writing, talking, creativity, and drama. The final three chapters contain discussions of the mass media and myth, examinations and teachers, and issues of responsibility. The latter chapter focuses on the wider social, moral, and humanistic responsibilities of english teachers and the inherent conflict between attempting to make students socially well-adjusted and, at the same time, developed individuals with minds of their own. This document is available as stock no. 05309 from the national council of teachers of english, 508 south sixth street, champaign, illinois 61820, $2.95. (dl)
