The English curriculum under fire : what are the real basics? by George, Jr., Ed Hillocks( Book )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Addressing the wave of public criticism of the English curriculum, the six articles in this book cite "basics" that are far different from those of the current "back to basics" movement. The first article surveys the nature of the curriculum attacks and suggests why English teachers may be more vulnerable to public criticism than members of other professions, and the second article addresses the essential question of why English teachers teach, defining rhetoric as the center of the language arts and of individual freedom. The third article examines the cry for basics in the teaching of writing and offers four neglected "touchstones" that could improve writing instruction, while the fourth article considers reasons why writing is so difficult for some and offers recommendations for instruction that are useful to both teachers and curriculum designers. The fifth article reviews two of the attempts to return to educational basics since the 1950s, "reexcavating" foundations that reveal the education of the literary imagination as an essential basic to morality and understanding, growth and awareness. The final essay illustrates the unconscious processes, often mistaken for misreadings, that allow children to make reading a deeply personal experience. (Hth)

Dilemmas in school finance by J. Alan, Ed Thomas( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph is based on a conference that was held under the sponsorship of the Midwest Administration Center, Department of Education of the University of Chicago, in February 1977. The conference centered on varying interpretations of the role of the school, the home, and the state in the governing and financing of education in Illinois and in the nation, as well as on conflicting views of the responsibilities of the local, state, and national governments. The program reflected the fact that disputes that arise as a result of overlapping jurisdictions are processed in state and national legislatures as well as by local school boards and that a revised and more activist role has been taken by state and federal court systems in recent years. The general trend appears to be toward a centralizing of decision-making, with a substantial degree of power being shifted from localities to both state and federal government, but especially to the latter. The main focus of the conference was on policies respecting educational finance at the state rather than the national level, and, in particular, on the present status and future outlook of the new school finance reform movement. Teacher centers : what place in education? by Seminar on Teacher Centers( Book )

4 editions published between 1977 and 1978 in English and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Seminar on Teacher Centers was convened in 1977 by the University of Chicago's Department of Education and Center for Policy Study in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris. This volume contains the papers commissioned for the seminar. These papers report on principal issues discussed, and give participants' perspectives. An analysis is presented of several definitions and schemes for classifying teacher centers. Two major streams of influences that have shaped the experience and conceptions of teacher centers to date are traced. The European experience with teacher centers is approached from two viewpoints. The organization of teacher centers in West Germany is described with discussions on the political implications of the teacher center idea and the development and implementation of curriculum innovations. The history, structure, and role of the teacher center in England is outlined, and future trends in education are considered. Sketches are presented from six American teacher centers, providing a set of referents for comparison with the European experience. The concluding papers contain analyses of teacher center issues and discussions on policies and research. (Jd)

Achievement in writing geometry proofs by Sharon L Senk( Book )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1981 a nationwide assessment of achievement in writing geometry proofs was conducted by the Cognitive Development and Achievement in Secondary School Geometry project. Over 1,500 students in 11 schools in 5 states participated. This paper describes the sample, instruments, grading procedures, and selected results. Results include: (1) at the end of the year approximately half the students in courses teaching proof can do more than trivial proofs; and (2) there are no sex-related differences in proof-writing achievement. Relations between proof-writing achievement and both the van Hieles' levels of reasoning and achievement on standard content are also discussed. (Author/MP)
