Religious thought in the nineteenth century by Bernard M. G Reardon( Book )

37 editions published between 1966 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 994 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mr Reardon begins with a substantial introduction characterizing the age as a whole, contrasting it with the previous century and assessing its permanent achievements. The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with twelve writers from continental Europe, with an account of the chosen author's life, work and opinions. The second deals with British and American writers and again each of the twelve chapters is introduced by an essay of about 1500 words. Mr Reardon gives special attention to the philosophical interpretation of religion and of Christianity in particular. Traditional dogma and ecclesiastical politics, whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, have been avoided and emphasis is given to ideas and interests that are characteristic of the period. Not all the thinkers introduced (e.g. Feuerbach, Comte, J. S. Mill) are themselves Christian. The result is a clear picture of the main currents of Western religious thought in the nineteenth century. It is a century which the student of religion today is likely to find of great interest and to which many will feel a close affinity
Religion in the age of romanticism : studies in early nineteenth century thought by Bernard M. G Reardon( Book )

18 editions published between 1985 and 1989 in English and Undetermined and held by 816 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents studies of early-nineteenth century religious thought in Germany, France and Italy in so far as it reflected the influence of the Romantic movement. Romanticism may be notoriously difficult to define, but the cast of mind usually associated with it - manifest in philosophy, theology and social theory as well as in literature, music and the visual arts - is never hard to detect, even though the forms of its expression may vary widely. The authors considered, including Schleiermacher, Hegel, Schelling, Rosmini, Lamennais, Renan and Comte, all took religion seriously as voicing a fundamental impulse of the human spirit, even if the doctrines and institutions of Christianity had in their view to be either radically modified or else rejected outright. They were not satisfied with what they were apt to regard as the 'soulless' rationalism of the preceding century, as equally they feared the growing encroachment of natural science upon the freedom and indeed the self-identity of the human consciousness. A middle way, they sensed, had to be found - one grounded in man's moral and aeshetic experience - between the old orthodoxy and sterile unbelief
Liberalism and tradition : aspects of Catholic thought in nineteenth-century France by Bernard M. G Reardon( Book )

14 editions published between 1975 and 2010 in English and held by 673 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a survey of French Catholic thought - theological, philosophical and political - during a period of marked spiritual and intellectual revival, delimited roughly by the Napoleonic Concordat with the Vatican in 1802 and the Separation Law of 1905. The thinkers and scholars studied include such diverse figures as Maistre, Lamennais, Lacordaire, Bautin, Gratry, Olle-Laprune, Maurice Blondel and Alfred Loisy. The authors studies these writers, and many others, in detail and analyses in characteristically lucid manner the distinctive contribution of each to French intellectual life in this 'second grand siècle'. Dr. Reardon examines too the major trends in French Catholic thought and concludes that in the nineteenth century there was a recurring tension between liberalism and tradition, between the poles of a secular and even agnostic humanism, and a rigid ultramontanism. The century saw a profound and many-sided reaction to traditional scholasticism, and Dr. Reardon explores this reaction in its various expressions, in theology and philosophy, in political and social thought. The approach is non-technical, and this book will be of considerable interest to a wide variety of readers, both general and specialist. It is the first book in English to cover the development of Catholic thought in France though the whole of the nineteenth century and it will be indispensable for all those who wish for a comprehensive and reliable background to one of the major currents of French intellectual thought in this century. -- from dust cover
