"In 1946 I was faced with the problem of teaching a course in undergraduate experimental psychology with no available text seeming suitable for background reading. Therefore, I started to bring together certain materials to be mimeographed and issued to the students as a substitute for a text. These materials were revised and expanded from quarter to quarter until the present final draft was written. While I set up the objective of continuous unification of method and content, I must add quickly that I was unable to attain the objective completely. In mimeographed form the text has been used in a two-quarter course for which Elementary Statistics was a prerequisite, and in a year course where statistics was taught as an integral part of the methodology. I believe that the factual subject matter can be comprehended readily without a statistical knowledge, but a full appreciation of experimental design problems requires some statistical thinking." Temporal codes for memories : issues and problems by Benton J Underwood( Book )

15 editions published between 1977 and 2014 in English and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report addresses the question of the mechanisms by which order information is attached to memories. The results of sixteen experiments indicate the role of some independent variables on temporal coding in relatively short-term memory and in long-term memory. Several experiments, in which changes in proactive inhibition are used as an index of temporal differentiation show that the nature of the words making up the lists is involved fundamentally in temporal coding. Other experiments demonstrate that, in relatively short-term memory, a subject cannot learn to improve his performance in estimating how far apart in time two events occurred. Still other experiments show that recency judgments for two events improve with practice, but the improvement is minimally influenced by the temporal separation of the events. The context in which memories are established is shown to influence temporal codes only if an ordering metric is a part of the context. Several theoretical propositions are advanced to account for the findings

Attributes of memory by Benton J Underwood( Book )

9 editions published between 1974 and 1983 in English and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This summary of research performed during the past five and one-half years and dealing with different attributes in memory functioning is organized around four attributes of memory: "Frequency Attribute: Verbal Discrimination" explores the development of the theory dealing with verbal discrimination tasks and lists several papers prepared during the contract period which are used as documentation for the theory. "Frequency Attribute: Classical Recognition" discusses the theory, application of the frequency theory, and a listing of the reports used to summarize the work in this area. "Associative Attribute: Massed versus Distributed Practice" discusses some of the findings in this area and lists some of the articles produced during the investigation. "Associative Class Attribute and Forgetting" discusses the theory and the research that was conducted. Two sections conclude the summary: "General" surveys the general findings and suggests further research, and "Temporal Attribute" reviews some of the unfinished research in this area. (Wr)

Studies of coding in verbal learning, by Benton J. Underwood and Adrienne H. Erlebacher by Benton J Underwood( Book )

7 editions published between 1965 and 2007 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Six experiments are reported in which free learning (FL) and paired- associate learning (PAL) were examined with respect to the effects of coding of verbal units on learning. In 2 FL experiments and 1 PAL experiment where response terms were manipulated, encoding of trigrams to words produced a more meaningful unit. Such encoding was shown to influence learning positively only if decoding was simple. Encoding of a stimulus term to a word was also shown to influence learning positively, but such encoding did not occur unless the possibilities were easily perceived. Finally, an experiment demonstrated sound coding of response terms, but the positive effect on transfer was small and limited to unmixed lists. We concluded that coding systems: (a) may influence learning positively if decoding is simple; (b) will produce only a small positive effect even under favorable conditions; (c) may have no positive effect even if used and may, under certain conditions, inhibit learning. Temporal codes for memories : issues and problems by Benton J Underwood( Book )

6 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Given two events, both of which are well remembered, can we specify which event occurred first? If so, how? For example, did Nixon resign, before or after Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs?Originally published in 1977, little was known about the accuracy of temporal codes for memories, and still less about the nature of the codes. This volume addresses the central question of the mechanisms by which order information is attached to memories. The results of sixteen previously unpublished experiments indicate the role of some independent variables on temporal coding in relatively short-term memo
