"Otto von Bismarck was more than a politician and a leader: he was the single driving force that turned the disparate states of Germany into one cohesive empire. He then went on to lead Germany and the rest of Europe intyo an age of political peace that lasted from 1871 until the outbreak of World War I. Under his influence, Germany thrived. Bismarck's use of statesmanship to fight for the interests of his country was legendary. As one of the most influential and powerful and powerful individuals in his country's history, [he] became a symbol of leadership and pride for German nationalists. ... Baismarck was not merely a hard and calculating statesman, but a man who ruled by pride, courage, and hatred. To fully comprehend [his] actions, we must first understand his feelings, his motivations and his private life. ..."--Back cover

"Ludwig, Emil, real name Cohn (Breslau, now Wroclaw, 1881-1948, Ascona), worked as a journalist and wrote numerous biographies romancées, in which much carefully gathered source material was fused and presented in a manner more appropriate to fiction. In the 1920s and 1930s he had a considerable vogue. His works include Bismarck (1926), Richard Dehmel (1913), Wagner oder die Entzauberten (1913), Goethe (1920), Wilhelm der Zweite (1925), Juli 14 (1929), Michelangelo (1930), Schliemann (1932), Roosevelt (1938), and Napoleon (1939). He became a Swiss citizen in 1932 and settled in the USA in 1940. His political commitment to democratic reforms during the Weimar Republic can be ascertained in the select edition of his newspaper articles (1919-32) by F. C. West, Emil Ludwig. Für die Weimarer Republik und Europa (1992). Gesammelte Werke (5 vols.) appeared 1945-6"--[]

Lincoln by Emil Ludwig( Book )

1 edition published in 1930 in English and held by 724 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The town of Lincoln is nestled in the lush green valley of the Rio Bonito in Southeastern New Mexico. It lies on US Route 380 about 57 miles west of Roswell and south of the Lincoln National Forest. Lincoln has been a National Landmark since 1960, and historians often refer to it as the most authentic Old West town remaining in the United States. Spanish settlers arrived in the area during the 1840s. By the 1860s, Lincoln served as a supply center for local ranches, mines, and nearby Fort Stanton. Lincoln merchants vied for lucrative government contracts, and the famous Lincoln County War erupted. As a result, Lincoln holds a unique place in American history, connected with the names of Lew Wallace, Billy the Kid, Sheriff Pat Garrett, and John Chisum. Seventeen historic buildings and four museums highlight the town as well as an annual folk pageant, The Last Escape of Billy the Kid, held since 1949

Stalin by Stephen Kotkin( Book )

29 editions published between 1942 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A magnificent new biography that revolutionizes our understanding of Stalin and his world. It has the quality of myth: a poor cobbler's son, a seminarian from an oppressed outer province of the Russian empire, reinvents himself as a top leader in a band of revolutionary zealots. When the band seizes control of the country in the aftermath of total world war, the former seminarian ruthlessly dominates the new regime until he stands as absolute ruler of a vast and terrible state apparatus, with dominion over Eurasia. While still building his power base within the Bolshevik dictatorship, he embarks upon the greatest gamble of his political life and the largest program of social reengineering ever attempted: the collectivization of all agriculture and industry across one sixth of the earth. Millions will die, and many more millions will suffer, but the man will push through to the end against all resistance and doubts. Where did such power come from? In Stalin, Stephen Kotkin offers a biography that, at long last, is equal to this shrewd, sociopathic, charismatic dictator in all his dimensions. The character of Stalin emerges as both astute and blinkered, cynical and true believing, people oriented and vicious, canny enough to see through people but prone to nonsensical beliefs. We see a man inclined to despotism who could be utterly charming, a pragmatic ideologue, a leader who obsessed over slights yet was a precocious geostrategic thinker--unique among Bolsheviks--and yet who made egregious strategic blunders. Through it all, we see Stalin's unflinching persistence, his sheer force of will--perhaps the ultimate key to understanding his indelible mark on history. Stalin gives an intimate view of the Bolshevik regime's inner geography of power, bringing to the fore fresh materials from Soviet military intelligence and the secret police. Kotkin rejects the inherited wisdom about Stalin's psychological makeup, showing us instead how Stalin's near paranoia was fundamentally political, and closely tracks the Bolshevik revolution's structural paranoia, the predicament of a Communist regime in an overwhelmingly capitalist world, surrounded and penetrated by enemies. At the same time, Kotkin demonstrates the impossibility of understanding Stalin's momentous decisions outside of the context of the tragic history of imperial Russia. The product of a decade of intrepid research, Stalin is a landmark achievement, a work that recasts the way we think about the Soviet Union, revolution, dictatorship, the twentieth century, and indeed the art of history itself"--
