Education and the many faces of the disadvantaged : cultural and historical perspectives by William W Brickman( Book )

12 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines various types of the disadvantaged in the United States, uncovers reasons for the multifaceted problem of social deprivation, and indicates constructive ways, through education, of helping the disadvantaged. Attention is also focused on the poor and disadvantaged in foreign lands. There are ten parts to the volume: the disadvantaged in urban America; the black American; the Spanish-speaking American; the North American Indian; the immigrant and refugee in America; the rural poor and America's undereducated adult; the middle class as culturally deprived; the culturally disadvantaged reader; the teacher and Federal programs for the disadvantaged; and, the disadvantaged in international perspective. Also included is an extensive bibliography on the school and the children of the poor. (Author/JM)

PLUME EFFECTS DATA STUDY PROGRAM( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report has two major objectives: To prepare charts predicting full scale heating patterns from the impingement of typical storable propellant rocket plumes on adjacent spacecraft surfaces, and to study the subscale testing techniques and instrumentation covering areas such as subscale model plume temperature and profile, thermal modeling of spacecraft surfaces, instrumentation for surface contamination and pressure effects testing. Results of the study showed that subscale model plume stagnation temperatures close to full scale unit values are achievable. Unavailability of a computer program to predict the profile from a microthrust engine with a converging approach sonic orifice left this area of consideration open. Parametric groupings for thermal modeling of a spacecraft skin were established, permitting prediction of full scale transient effects from subscale test data. Design concepts were established for simple 'plug-in' modules for the measurement of surface contamination effects on several types of functional spacecraft surfaces. Consideration of pressure loading instrumentation revealed no unusual problem for static pressure measurements, but did reveal a potential response and miniaturization requirement for acoustic loadings measurements. Advanced Illumination Source( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This contract covers the engineering development of an advanced illumination source for battlefield application. The demonstration system is intended for installation in a cargo aircraft, providing 20 minutes of illumination of a large battlefield area (several square miles) to an intensity level sufficient to insure efficient conduct of hunt and kill operations. The system under development is unique in that it utilizes the combustion products of (liquid oxygen and JP) reactants to heat quartz cylinders to incandescence to provide high intensity light. A considerable amount of program effort was expended on the design and fabrication of the reactant feed and control system. It is estimated that physical completion was at the 85 percent point at the time program activity was terminated. (Author)
