China joins the world : progress and prospects by Michel Oksenberg( Book )

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the 1970s, the United States has facilitated China's entry into world affairs. What are the results of the effort to integrate China into the international community at an early stage in its rise? How has the international system affected Chinese behavior, and how has China influenced the international system? Each chapter in this volume explores the record of Chinese participation in a specific issue area: the United Nations, arms control, the environment, human rights, banking and finance, trade, energy, telecommunications, and international law. These in-depth and timely studies reveal considerable success--more than most forecasts expected--but the road ahead may prove tougher than the terrain already covered

Making China policy : lessons from the Bush and Clinton administrations( Book )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume evaluates the formation and execution of US policy towards China and Taiwan during the crucial 12 years of the Bush and Clinton administrations. It explores the increasingly complex environment facing policy makers in the wake of the tragic events of Tiananmen, paticularly the growing role played by interest group lobbies, media commentary and Congress. All these influences combined to dismantle the bipartisan agreement that had supported positive relations with Beijing, replacing it with a more politicized and pluralized policy arena. The authors document how, within this new context, the Bush and Clinton administrations struggled to forge consensus, implement China policies and maintain a modicum of relations
