"This book presents a comprehensive summary of physiological psychology, based on scientific observation more so than philosophical analysis. The book attempts to gather within the limits of a single volume the main results of the modern study of psychology from the physiological and experimental points of view. The book is divided into three sections. The first section examines the structure and function of the nervous system. This survey includes the development of the nervous system, neurochemistry, reflex functions, and the cerebral hemispheres. The second section examines the relationship between the nervous system and the mind and mental phenomena. This section includes examinations of sensation and perception, time relations of mental phenomena, feelings and emotions, memory and the process of learning, and thought. The third section, "The Nature of the Mind," discusses general relations of body and mind, dualism, mental unity, and reality"--Publisher. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Adjustment and mastery; problems in psychology by Robert Sessions Woodworth( Book )

13 editions published between 1933 and 2014 in English and Chinese and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A century of progress! The name is certainly appropriate for the last hundred years, especially in the fields of science and invention. The more you learn of the recent progress of science, the more impressed and even thrilled you become; and the more you reflect on our modern improvements the more you are amazed at the distance we have come in this short span of a mere one hundred years. And the end is not in sight. Science and invention are advancing at a more rapid pace than ever, and so accustomed have we grown to this advance that we fully expect to see it continue. We are less attached to the old ways than we used to be and more willing to adopt new ways and new ideas. To call a person progressive nowadays is to praise him, and the same with a town, a nation, or a century; for progress has become one of our great ideals. How then can anyone venture to raise the question whether progress is good for us? This book discusses adjustment and mastery in individuals"--Introduction. "This commemorative volume provides a collection of Professor Robert Sessions Woodworth's distinctive contributions to the field of psychology. They have appeared in numerous places; they reflect the variety and much of the character of his work in the field of psychology, both in earlier and in more recent years. It is believed that the many hundreds of students who have known him in his lectures, seminars, and laboratory will appreciate the rescue, in a single volume, of these representative papers from their scattered sources. There is included Professor Woodworth's autobiography (first published in A History of Psychology in Autobiography, 1932) a document showing remarkable insight into the manifold ingredients of a mature personality"--Foreword. The care of the body by Robert Sessions Woodworth( Book )

12 editions published between 1912 and 2012 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is intended chiefly for the young man, and is founded on the belief that an intelligent man, without technical knowledge of medicine, and without excessive attention to the care of his health, can still do much to keep himself in good condition. An intelligent man will desire to understand the reasons for his actions, and will demand some information regarding the processes of the body as a basis for undertaking the management of his health. Accordingly the book enters, not too deeply, into some of the important topics of physiology, but, not wishing to stray far from the practical, it makes no effort to be complete on the scientific side. It is a book on hygiene. Of the two great divisions of this subject, it is concerned almost entirely with what is called personal hygiene, though it contains a few allusions to the importance of public hygiene, the most promising science of the times. Public hygiene is the concern of the specialist, though the good citizen should be aware of its importance. But personal hygiene is the direct concern of every man, since he must be his own manager in matters of food and sleep, exercise and recreation, and other daily activities which are influential in determining the difference between good health and mediocre health"--Preface.
