Gustave Adolf, the great by Nils Ahnlund( Book )

An inspired leader whose sweeping military, political, and economic innovations transformed the arts of war and governance throughout Europe, Gustavus Adolphus was one of the dominant figures of the seventeenth century. He made Sweden the leading power of Northern Europe, championed the northern Protestant cause in the Thirty Years' War, and was a great administrator as well as a brilliant soldier, whose reforms helped define the development of the modern state. Gustavus Adolphus the Great follows this extraordinary soldier-king through his childhood and education, his uncertain ascension to the throne at the age of sixteen, and his short but brilliant military reign. The stage is set with the civil disturbances at the turn of the seventeenth century when Sigismund III of Poland (the son of John III of Sweden and Catherine, sister of Sigismund II of Poland) ascended the Swedish throne in 1954 only to be deposed (due to his Catholicism) by Gustavus's father, Charles IX, in 1599. The resulting period of chronic warfare left Gustavus, crowned in 1611, a legacy of an empty treasury and a throne in constant threat of being reclaimed by his uncle, Sigismund. The young king more than met the challenge, however, and marked the beginning of his innovative reforms by striking a deal with Denmark that allowed Swedish ships to pass through the Baltic. Once he'd achieved financial stability at home, Gustavus took on the modernization of the Swedish army, overhauling the domestic conscription system and hiring mercenary soldiers. His revolutionary battle tactics maximized his army's size and speed, creating a military force unriveled in the North at the time. He set out to secure the Baltic with great success and then was eventually - through reluctantly - drawn into the Thirty Years' War, where he left an indelible mark for both his indomitable generalship and his personal courage in battle. Gustavus Adolphus the Great brings the king to life on and off the battlefield, examining his relationships with his loved ones as well as with his subjects, from the nurturing bond he enjoyed with his father to the antagonistic relationship he had with his lifelong enemy, Sigismund of Poland, to his politically strategic marriage, and, perhaps most importantly, his relationship with Sweden's highly influential chancellor, Axel Oxenstierna. -- from dust cover
