Reading comprehension instruction, 1783-1987 : a review of trends and research by H. Alan Robinson( Book )

13 editions published between 1989 and 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 558 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the methods, materials, outcomes, and technologies of past literacy practice, with special focus on the teaching of reading comprehension. The book presents a study of published texts on reading comprehension instruction in America in the "preresearch" period (1783-1910), as well as published research reports from 1910 through 1987. The book argues that many of the trends in comprehension instruction can be traced to developments in American psychology and looks at future directions for both the practitioner and the researcher. A review of all the studies focused on reading comprehension instruction discussed in the book and an alphabetical listing by author of each study are included in the appendixes. (Keh)

Fusing reading skills and content by H. Alan Robinson( Book )

14 editions published between 1969 and 1980 in English and held by 502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This International Reading Association publication presents a view of the problems of reading in the content fields as they relate to the secondary school curriculum. The first part deals with the beginning and the growth of a comprehensive reading program at the University of Chicago Laboratory School. Eleven of the school's faculty provide insights into how a teacher in his own content area can upgrade his students' reading. An administrator and reading consultant at the same school relate how they support a school-wide reading effort. Papers composing the first part were all presented at a special institute at the 1969 International Reading Association Convention. Part 2 includes papers presented at other times during the convention but which were related to the general theme and which were in favor of a reading program as "part and parcel" of the content learning program. References are included with many of the individual articles. (This document previously announced as ed 036 399.) (nh)

Teacher effectiveness in elementary language arts: a progress report by H. Alan Robinson( Book )

3 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This survey of recent research on teacher behaviors probes seven areas of elementary language arts teaching: teaching linguistics to elementary and preschool children; teaching listening skills to children in the elementary school; teaching literature to children; children's oral language/speaking; reading instruction; spelling instruction; and the teaching of writing. Answers were sought to these questions: (1) What teaching behaviors are associated with pupil "success" as defined in the respective studies? And (2) How can one identify and describe these activities in the classroom milieu? It was concluded that gaps exist in the crucial area of "precise activities at points of interaction between teacher and pupil." In addition to sections reporting on each of the seven areas probed, the book includes "Plan for a Five-Phase Study of Teaching Effectiveness,""Criteria of Excellence in Teaching the Language Arts,""Evaluative Instruments and Pertinent Research," and "a Forward Look."
