With the end of the Cold War, the search for a new international and economic order has begun. In this comprehensive account, Sylvia Ostry provides a critical analysis of an international trade system in the throes of rapid and far-reaching change. With keen historical awareness, Ostry examines the role of key economic power brokers, particularly the United States, in the reconstruction and reconfiguration of an international economy after World War II. She argues that U.S. policy efforts were so successful that they led to an unprecedented renewal of economic growth, living standards, and edu

The female worker in Canada by Sylvia Ostry( Book )

19 editions published between 1961 and 1968 in English and French and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As one in a series of studies dealing with selected aspects of the labor force in Canada, this monograph reviews the historical trends in the labor force activity of women over the course of this century. In particular, it focuses on the married women who have entered the labor market in increasing numbers in recent decades and whose activity is a matter of widespread interest both for economic as well as social and cultural reasons. Based on census data, the report includes major sections on: (1) The Working Life Cycle--participation profiles for women based on age, residence, marital status, and fertility and stage of family formation, (2) Other Influences Affecting the Labor Force Participation of Married Women--income of husband, education of wife, husband's employment status, and financial contribution of working wives, and (3) Earnings Differences Between Men and Women. The occupational composition of the Canadian labour force by Sylvia Ostry( Book )

17 editions published between 1961 and 1968 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The changing occupational composition of the working population reflecting, as it does, the gradual remoulding of labour supply to the pattern of labour demand, is the result of a number of fundamental growth trends in the economy. On the demand side two broad sets of factors underlie the long-run occupational transformation of the labour force: differing rates of growth of different industries and modification of the occupational composition within individual industries. ..."--Intro

Unemployment in Canada by Sylvia Ostry( Book )

18 editions published between 1961 and 1971 in English and Undetermined and held by 114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The broad outline of the course of unemployment in Canada since the end of the War is well known and there is no need for recapitulation here. In Table 1 and Chart 1, it may be observed that while overall levels were generally low for the first postwar decade (averaging less than 3 1/2 per cent for the period 1946-56) there was a sharp increase in rates after 1957 which persisted well into the 1960s. The deterioration of employment conditions after 1957 generated a lively debate in both Canada and the United States (where similar conditions prevailed) over the source of the higher level of unemployment and the most appropriate policy measures which should be adopted to combat it. ..."--Intro

Provincial differences in labour force participation by Sylvia Ostry( Book )

15 editions published between 1961 and 1971 in English and Undetermined and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At any given time there are differences in labour force participation across this country: the all-Canada participation rate conceals a good deal of interprovincial variation. These differences in provincial labour force membership, in part, reflect differences in the economic and social environment of the provinces which influence the labour force behaviour of the population and, in part, are the consequence of differing population compositions among the provinces. The purpose of the present study is simply to expose the extent of geographic (interprovincial) variation in labour force participation in Canada in 1961 and to trace some of the historical changes that have occurred in respect to this phenomenon. Data for Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories are excluded throughout."--Intro
Historical estimates of the Canadian labour force by Frank T Denton( Book )

9 editions published between 1961 and 1967 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Prior to November 1945, when the Labour Force Survey commenced, the only comprehensive estimates of the economically active population in Canada were the measures provided by the decennial censuses. The definition of the economically active was, however, based on different criteria in the censuses before 1951 than in those of 1951 and 1961. This study presents a series of census-date estimates of the economically active population adjusted to a consistent definitional base. ..."--Intro
