Indian philosophy : a counter perspective by Daya Krishna( Book )

14 editions published between 1991 and 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Most writings on Indian Philosophy assume that its central concern is with moksa, that the Vedas along with the Upanisadic texts are at the root of it and that it consists of six orthodox systems known as Mimamasa, Vedanta, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya and Yoga, on the one hand and three unorthodox systems: Buddhism, Jainism and Carvaka, on the other. Besides these, they accept generally the theory of Karma and the theory of Purusartha as parts of what the Indian tradition thinks about human action." "The essays in this volume question these assumptions and show that there is little ground for accepting them. A new counter-perspective is thus prepared for the a articulation of the Indian philosophical tradition which breaks the traditional frame in which it has usually been presented."--BOOK JACKET
Political development : a critical perspective by Daya Krishna( Book )

The problematic and conceptual structure of classical Indian thought about man, society, and polity by Daya Krishna( Book )

9 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book undertakes a critical analysis of the moral, legal, political and social thought of ancient India - as reflected in the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Dharmasastras, Buddhist, Jaina and Agamic literature - from a tradition-rooted yet liberal/modern point of view. It provides a much-needed corrective to the standard picture of classical Indian thought, especially in the contemporary West, where metaphysics, epistemology, theology and spirituality are in the forefront, whereas ethics, politics and sociology are conspicuously absent." "The author articulates India's 'knowledge enterprises' in the realms of law, society, ethics and politcs. He examines the successive transformations of the problems in these realms and highlights concepts through which they were apprehended, thought about and organized into theoretical systems. The changes in the key concepts and the introduction of new ones over time have been emphasized, bringing into focus the developmental character of thought in these domains. The author seeks to bring out the relevance of these concepts in the contemporary cognitive context." "This book will interest students of philosophy and all those interested in the intellectual contribution of ancient India."--Jacket

Daya Krishna was easily the most creative and original Indian philosopher of the second half of the twentieth century. His thought and philosophical energy dominated academic Indian philosophy and determined the nature of the engagement of Indian philosophy with Western philosophy during that period. Krishna's thought and publications address a broad range of philosophical issues, including issues of global philosophical importance that transcend considerations of particular traditions; issues particular to Indian philosophy; and issues at the intersection of Indian and Western philosophy
