Crump qui avait tant fasciné Freud et Thomas Mann a ramené en pleine lumière l'œuvre de Lewisohn (1883-1956), qui fut trente ans avant Nabokov le dénonciateur le plus féroce de la bonne pensée américaine. Crime passionnel (1932 - traduit deux ans plus tard par Antonin Artaud et Bernard Steele), qui scandalisa la critique de l'époque, est sans doute son roman le plus ambitieux : un texte dont la modernité en tout cas, un long demi-siècle ayant passé, laisse sans voix. Lewisohn y retrace, avec une minutie qui ne nous épargne rien, le destin de quelques couples new-yorkais dans le vent - entre " Belle Epoque "et " Années Folles ".
